Hi,
Wp-united can handle username changes just fine — accounts are linked by ID, not username. Something else must have gone wrong.
What makes you think the account is deleted? Have you checked in the phpBB database?
It’s definitely gone. I went to WPU–>WP usernames, found his WP account, and had WPU create a phpbb account to match. I then went back to phpbb ACP and changed his name again. This time it worked fine. I don’t know what the difference was but all is working now.

It was working but then last night the same thing happened. I changed a user name in the phpbb ACP and the account on BOTH sides disappeared. I had to create a new account for him.

I just tested this on my (live) site.
I chose an integrated user, and changed his username in the phpBB ACP.
Afterwards, I could still find him in the usermapper by typing in his WordPress username into the search box. As expected, his WordPress name was the same as before, but his phpBB username had changed. The two accounts were still linked.
I find it hard to believe that users are deleted in your case, unless another mod or plugin is doing that. Before you change the username, please note down the user’s user ID in phPBB & WordPress, and check if they are still there in the respective databases (use phpMyAdmin to look) adter the change.
