I am very new to word press and was given an old site and now I need to make it look nicer. I found a cool template but have little to no idea how to make my site look like the template, when I uploaded it and set it, it looked nothing alike

What theme? Also, a link to your site would be helpful.

the theme is academica,

These forums only support themes from here:
http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/

But it looks like you might be able to get help with that theme from the developers at:
http://www.wpzoom.com/support/

But if you are new, this might also be helpful:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Getting_Started_with_WordPress

Themes usually don’t look at all like the demo sites until you’ve added content and set up some of the theme options.

I have actually decided to use the responsive theme

and if you go to the site now you can see I still have some holes to fill in. I figured out to use the menus and add a header but am now struggling to fix the font sizes and add a picture to the right on the homepage
