• On the presentation page it says:

“To install a theme you generally just need to upload the theme folder into your wp-content/themes directory.”

Where do I find this directory? In the wordpress dashboard or on my host control panel? (I’m with Bluehost)

Sorry if this is blindingly obvious!

  • You need to ftp into your host and thence to wp-content/themes

Someone help a clueless newbie PLEASE!?

Like Root said – FTP into your host, and navigate to wp-content/themes in your wordpress directory.

We cannot *possibly* get any more obvious than that.

“Clueless newbies” should read the manual 🙂

Cassie, in case you are still having problems. FTP stands for file transfer protocol. This is the means by which files are uploaded on to your website. In your website, like on your computer you have a range of folders and files.

So what is meant by FTP is send it to your host, then you should be able to manage your folders and files from within.

Hosts work differently, what I normally do with Host4Profit is to send them a winzipped folder/file and ask them to do the task for me. I find that Host4Profit is very helpful

Hey you nerds. Maybe I didnt explain it clearly but nerdism doesn’t help much either.

    @amandaking

there are 100s of pages available beneath the documentation link above that are put there for the sole intention of being read. They cover literally EVERYTHING.

It’s not nerdy to suggest to someone that doesnt understand what ftp is that they need to do some reading. Instead, It’s rather prudent.

God forbid, the people that actively help here every day had to “teach” basic Internet 101 or Computer 102 to every person that wanted to use WordPress.

Eventually, ppl HAVE to read. This is a medium that requires it. And they dont have to read regurgitated codex crap displayed here — its already there.

Thats what the docs are for — and isnt that what Google lives and breathes for???

AmandaKing: [quote] Maybe I didnt explain it clearly

No, you didn’t. And I couldn’t either. That’s why the documentation has been created.

The rest is just waste of time and bandwidth.

Sorry I thought this one reason for this blog was to help people with their problems. Obviously it is just to tell people go read.

I was not necessarily having a go at telling Cassio to read material but to throw out jargon without explanation and then trying to make him/her feel stupid because she did not understand some basics was unwarranted.

If you tell a person to go read something to assist them with a specific issue, throwing the entire manual at them isn’t very helpful. Perhaps Moshu you could help by telling me the specific page that Cassie should have been referred to.

It certainly didnt help Cassie by calling her a “clueless newbie”. Actually I had the same problem as Cassie a couple of weeks ago. I spent ages reading WordPress documentation and it was only when I went to my host did I gain any help on this issue.

It is not necessary to teach computers 101 to everyone, but some people may need that type of assistance and it should be provided without insulting them.

I really appreciate your comment Amanda. I’ve been reading ad nauseum and couldn’t find help for this same issue until I found your post in this forum. It was unpleasant to read posts disparaging Cassie for not knowing the jargon. For those of us who aren’t computer literate, the learning curve is steep, and it’s hard to know where to look for help. There is a lot that is assumed a reader knows. It’s really a bit like learning a new language. And I certainly hope this forum is here to help people like me. As for “regurgitated codex crap”–that’s the precise point–we don’t want it regurgitated–we want it put into language that we can understand, as Cassie requested. Also, the suggestion about precisely where to find the help document is good, because sometimes I don’t know the correct search terms. Anyway, thanks Amanda for being a champion!
