  • Hi, do you see this issue occurring with other Vimeo videos too or only this one?

Could you test the “Vimeo Test w/ title” link near the bottom of http://demo.status301.net/easy-fancybox-sandbox/ with IE 9 and tell me if that one works or not?

    Hello Ravan,

We are having the exact same issue at our website AND we see the same issue on your demo page at http://demo.status301.net/easy-fancybox-sandbox/
(as you asked) when viewing in IE 8.

We really hope you can help. Love the plugin… our site is all vimeo videos, though… so we need it to work across all browsers.

Thank you! Let us know if you have any other questions or if we can help.

    Shaley

Hi Shaley, the weird thing is that Easy FancyBox uses (as far as I know) the correct iframe embed code as suggested by Vimeo itself…

Do the videos display in IE 8 when embedding a Vimeo movie straight into a web page, using the official embed code?

    Hi Ravan,

Thanks SO much for getting back to us. Also – happy new year!

We just looked in IE 8 and realized that the vimeo video embedded on your sandbox page wasn’t showing up at all… there is just a white space where it should be. We had noticed the white space before, but didn’t think anything of it since it’s a sandbox area and they tend to get unruly. 😉

So, we tested by embedding a vimeo video directly in our own website and we saw the same behavior… it shows perfectly in FF and Safari, but there is only an empty white space in IE 8 – just like in your sandbox site.

What do you suggest for our next step to figure this out?

Just fyi – don’t hesitate to wait until after the New Year holiday to work on this. We suspect that fancybox is having some issue with vimeo videos in IE across the board (since we’re seeing the same behavior both at your sandbox and our site)… but at least in our case, we’re still in a dev environment, so it can wait a couple of days at this point. Eventually, though, we’re hoping to use fancybox as our solution. 🙂

    Thank you so much!

    Shaley

Oh, also – just so you know, we did use the official embed code as provided when you click share on a vimeo video to test the embedding on our site… forgot to mention that.

Hi Shaley, happy new year to you too 🙂

To get things clear and because I do not have IE to test with myself: does embedding the video (using the official share code provided by Vimeo) straight into the page, not involving FancyBox at all, result in a white space when viewed with IE 8? And what about IE 9 and 10?

    Hi Ravan,

I’ve solved it and it’s nothing to do with FancyBox. I figured it out testing to answer your questions.

IE8 behavior = nothing shows when embedded, blank box when using FancyBox window

    IE9 = same behavior

    (IE10 I don’t have)

So, on my site I turned off the FancyBox behavior to auto-detect vimeo. That didn’t change anything.

So, on my site I deactivated FancyBox. That did change one thing… the link to the vimeo video didn’t open in a FancyBox window, it opened at Vimeo.com AND it displayed a message that said, to view install Flash Player.

Argh… I’m somewhat disappointed in Vimeo… since this means we’ll have to communicate with our users to have them install Flash if it isn’t installed already. Anyway, once Flash was installed all worked perfectly.

I then reactivated FancyBox on my site and it worked perfectly there too.

Finally, I installed FireFox on my PCs to see what would happen – ironically, I had to install Flash a second time for FireFox to make Vimeo videos work in FireFox on the same computer where I’d just installed Flash for Internet Explorer.

    :/

    Ah well.

So – good thing for you – FancyBox has proven to continue to be dependable – yay!

I do have one question, which I think might be helpful for your customers.

Would it be possible to make FancyBox compensate for vimeo’s issue by displaying a message that says “This video can’t be played with your current setup. Please install Adobe Flash Player.” with a link to <get.adobe.com/flashplayer/> when no video appears? Just food for thought.

I appreciate all your help and that you continued to make yourself available.

If you ever need a tester, please reply to this post and I’ll be in touch.

    Much aloha,

    Shaley

Oh, also – we will be asking Vimeo about if they have any future plans to fix this issue automatically… not sure they can, but they must have some thoughts on it.

I’d also like to know if they get many complaints…

    Thanks,

    Shaley

    Look at this nonsense…
    Ahhh, Vimeo – so dissapointing.

Thank you for your extensive report on the issue 🙂 too bad we cannot do anything about it from our end because everything takes place inside the iframe… I did read that Vimeo is using HTLM5 embedding as much as possible but apparently this still does not work in IE.

Maybe switch to Dailymotion or Youtube then? Or do you get the same issues in IE there?

    Thank you Ravan!

A good plugin is hard enough to find. An engaged and helpful developer is downright priceless. 🙂
