Override query for retrieving posts to also retrieve tagged images

I’d like to override the query on my blog index so as well as retrieving the latest posts it also retrieves images that have at least one media tag. All in the same query, so I can mix the images in with the posts in the order in which they were added.

Anyone got any tips on how to do this?
