Any way to make photos bigger on WordPress blog?

Hi I’m running the new ‘2012’ template and as with the ‘Journalist’ template I used to use the maximum size of picture upload appears to be 700 pixels wide. Ideally I’d like to make the photos larger and the text in the sidebar to have less room. Can this be done or do I have to switch to another template altogether?
