I’d like to know how to get it into the sidebar… is there a shortcode?
I use domain_name.com/events and it displays just fine. You can set it to a different slug (aka subfolder) in the settings as well. See “Events URL slug”.
in the settings, set the “Default view for the Events” to “Calendar”.
To make a top menu item that points to the page, create a new page called “Events” and make sure that the slug for that is “events”. No need to insert anything in the body of that new page, the WordPress system will call up the plugin’s slug and not the page’s slug when anyone clicks that menu item.

Could somebody give more information about these template tags? I’m not new to WP but I don’t know where to start here and it looks like quite some coding is involved.
I would just like to show Calendar/List on my homepage and there should really be a simpler way than going knee-deep into WordPress.

Hey roppolo, what exactly are you aiming to accomplish? The same thing as the original poster?
niteoweb: what were you interested in finding out? The template tags themselves, while not something that require a ton of dev knowledge, probably do require some familiarity and comfort with the core plugin files. The way the plugin is built, it is not intended to exist on the homepage…the calendar is meant to live at a designated /events page, and we’ve built out our infrastructure on that basis. We offered the template tags for those who wanted to tweak the functionality a bit (but didn’t offer this as a core setting as it isn’t something we actively promote or encourage).
All that said, to accomplish your specific goal – my guess is this thread will add some value: http://tri.be/support/forums/topic/setting-the-calendar-as-the-home-page/. It gives the instructions to accomplish something very similar to what you noted. Let me know if that doesn’t help, though.
