permalink changes – will they break links?

    If I go into the options and adjust the permalink structure from a date and name based to a custom setting… will it break all my old articles and files?

    So if someone has linked to the permalink and I change it (so it’s a new URL) and they visit that old permalink styled URL, it will still work perfectly fine via the htaccess settings and not notice a blip?

    Will Google notice “new” pages and ban me cause of dupes or 40X forwarding?

    I think I’m probably just forgetting that permalink means all this, but it’s something I don’t want to take a risk on and what to confirm before I do it.

    I did just that recently on my site (http://www.avalon5.com). I was using the default /p=??? permalink and wanted to change to a more textual type, so I installed a plugin which makes this transition easier.

    If you go to my site and then browse the plugins page (http://www.avalon5.com/index.php/805/) you should see a link to a ‘permalink migration’ plugin.

    That will hopefully do the trick for you!

    Hmmm… are you sure it jsut doesn’t do it automatically? I don’t think I’d need to install a plugin to just change the permalinks?

    The “default” permalinks always work. So if you’re changing away from that to something else, you have nothing to worry about.

    If you’re changing from one custom permalink to another, then yes, all links to your site will break unless you use some sort of plugin to deal with it.

    I’m changing from:

    Date and name based
    » /2007/02/18/sample-post/

    to

    Custom, specify below
    Custom structure: /%year%/%postname%/

    Will that cause link breaking problems? Will it be an issue for dupe content on Google?
