I’m actually working on this for a client. It is fairly complex and requires a lot of extra “wiring”.

If you want to attempt your version I recommend looking at the hooks & filters on the http://www.charlestonsw.com site and building a side-by-side plugin.

You can manipulate the search form and query processor at a fairly intricate level that should allow you to do this (it is the same method I am using for “Enhanced Search”). The benefit is by writing a separate plugin that uses the hooks you can simply deactivate your plugin if it breaks SLP and the original SLP code remains intact/unaltered.

It also means future SLP updates will not obliterate your work.

If you want a good starting example of writing a side-by-side plugin and don’t want to sort through the docs you may want to purchase Tagalong, Enhanced Search, or Enhanced Results and see how they are “wired” and use it as a starting point. Tagalong is probably the most complex. Enhanced Search is currently the simplest version.
