Do I need a theme for (forum website)

I want to create a forum website, but was wondering if I needed a theme? I dont really see any forum theme that I feel would be compatible with forum plugins and I think themese are really only for websites that are for business, sales, and etc. What do you do for forums? Do you just use plugins and no themes? Any help would be great thanks.
