• Hi everyone,

I have spent some days now trying to understand/searching what all these Technorati and Ping-O-matic stuff is all about. (Got my head spinning ); )I understand that having your blog syndicated is a good way to bring in traffic, but I have some questions.

    1) Technorati, Feedburner, RSS…are they actually the same? They all provide syndication services but from just different companies/groups? Just like you have different car magazines all talking about cars?

    2) Ping-O-Matic, I understand that WordPress uses it by default. But do I have to set up accounts with all the services that Ping-O-Matic sends the ping to?

e.g. Do I have to open an account at FeedBurner…IceRocket…Technorati..Weblog?

    3) Before I knew WordPress uses Ping-O-Matic by default, I have opened accounts at FeedBurner and Technorati. I have also installed the FeedBurner plugin from Orderedlist.com by Steve Smith.

Will having accounts I opened manually and the FeedBurner plugin I installed cause any issues with WordPress/Ping-O-Matic? Should I remove them? Will they cause double posting/feeding?

    4) Since WordPress uses Ping-O-Matic by default, what are the plugins at the Plugin/Syndicaton section of the Codex for?

    5) Why do blogs have all those syndication buttons displayed at their posts/sidebar? Thought the syndication part is handled automatically by WordPress/PingoMatic already?

e.g. at http://www.mikefilsaime.com/blog2/, at the bottom of the sidebar you can see all those buttons there.

    6) Anyone knows what plugin the following site is using to house all those buttons mentioned in 5)?

http://www.andrechaperon.com/ (The Subscribe button, mouse over it and the list of button drops down.)

Much tidier in my opinion 🙂

Thanks in advance for reading this LONG post. Any help or redirection to resources for me to read will be greatly appreciated.

And pardon me for my ignorance!

  • 1. No they are not the same, Technorati is a blog directory, FeedBurner is just another way of serving your feed to people and RSS is an actual syndication format.

    2. No you don’t.

    3. They shouldn’t, the FeedBurner Plugin just makes it easier to serve your content through FeedBurner.

    4. They just add extra functionality to the feeds which WordPress generates.

    5. Those buttons are for subscribing to the feed in different ways, like you can use Google Reader or Bloglines to read the feeds.

    6. I believe it’s the Subscribe Me Plugin
