100s of new registered user emails per day (3 posts)

Since upgrading to the latest version of WP I've started to recieve multiple new user registration emails, culminating in over 100 recieved today alone!

Also whilst receiving the emails I've noticed some intermittent database connection errors, I've been in touch with my host and they are looking in to it, however I've no idea if recieving 1000s of new user emails is the sign of an attack or not!

One concern I do have is that on my site there is nowhere for a user to sign-up. I realise a person could just type into the browser http://www.yoursite.com/wp-login.php to access a sign up page. But surely this is beyond the knowledge of the average web user, so this makes me a little more concerned!

What would you advise / suggest?

Are you using any plugins such as, for example: http://wordpress.org/plugins/bad-behavior/

    Also, review: http://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress

on my site there is nowhere for a user to sign-up.

Look at your settings on your Dashboard and be sure registration and comments are disabled...and if you still keep getting new registered users, someone somewhere is getting into your site.
