100% sidebar height

Hello, i need to set this sidebar so it touches the footers top border in every page, but when i set the padding for the sidebar 100% it just stretches a lot furthers then the text on the left side. How to set the sidebar 100% so it would scale with the text on the left side( main content), Thanks!
