Lost subcategories under 2.3

Recent upgrade to 2.3 went smoothly, aside from the fact that I’ve lost access to all of my subcategories; only top-level categories appear on the post-new and edit-categories pages.

They’re still there – existing posts in subcategories retain their category affiliation, and just to be sure I’ve checked the new taxonomy database tables and the sub-to-parent category relationships are also intact, albeit in their new form. Any ideas as to why I can’t access them any more, given that I’m using unmodified admin pages?

Anything showing in the parent field in the term_taxonomy table?

Note: use phpMyAdmin to look at that table.

One of the first things I did was check the new taxonomy tables in the database, and they were populated correctly during the upgrade, parent field included. Rather worryingly, and without even changing any code, my subcategories were restored to my post-new and admin/category pages approximately fifteen minutes or so later. Existing post<>category affiliations seemed intact throughout.

I’m suffering a separate category-related problem now, but for me this one is resolved…

had the same issue..

here’s what to do:

simply add a new subcategory and boom, your old ones are back.. you can then delete the new subcategory if you like..

did anyone file a bug report?

while it’s great to have a work-around, it would also be great to get to the bottom of the problem and fix it.

Haven’t been able to duplicate this, but if someone has a database backup from before they updated, that would be helpful in duplicating this.

Michael, I have a dump if you are in need of… I got the exact same problem, and also, the solution was to create a new subcategory, and things have been corrected… if you need it mail me cedric _at_ toucouleur.fr

Just a note: you can also use any category on a post and save it and the problem will be fixed. From what I can tell, the problem just requires you to use the new table at least once and all the categories pop back into place.
