loosing sort dropdown in child theme

I created a child theme but the child theme is not carrying over the sort drop down menu, instead, the area where the sort was becomes a search window. Additionally, if possible, I would like to actually move the sort menu to the right of the regular menu and before the regular search area…and make the search box not drop down over the header image but just be fill-able on location where the magnifying glass is. Is any of this possible? It would really be awesome because I really like the rest of the design of this template. I also have very limited php knowledge, sorry and thank you.
