Problems with plugins

Could someone please help me with this problem.
I have just downloaded two new plugins from the WP pllugin directory (a calendar, wp stats). I have uploaded these to the “wp-content/plugins” folder on my web site as detailed in the instructions but I cannot see them in the plugin section to enable them to be activated.
Any idea why this is not working ?
