Index.html Problem

I have just launched a WordPress site to replace a HTML site.

I deleted the old index.html file from root directory. However I get a 404 error if the following url is executed:

http://www.website.com/index.html

How can I get http://www.website.com/index.html to direct to http://www.website.com instead of a 404 error?
