error adding new plugin

I am using MAMP to develop a new site. when i try searching for plugins i receive this error

An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums.

this started happening after i deleted a plugin, it was working and returning search results without any problems before.
