Optional backlink on plugin

I’ve been developing WordPress plugins for years now, and I decided to add an option inside plugin’s settings panel, that would add a link to my site in the footer.

The question is, is this a common practice? Is this OK?

Also, should the option be active by default and allow the user to switch it off?

This should be looked at like a “donation”. Help me develop the plugin by promoting my site.
