500 Internal Server Error on TechStyles.com.au

    Hello all.

    Out of the blue in the last 30 minutes my site TechStyles crashed, with the following 500 Internal Server Error message, copied below. I’ve made no plugin or coding changes today, the last one I did make was installing the Jetpack plugin yesterday. I’ve gone into cpanel and deleted that plugin, which did not rectify things.

    I contacted my hosting provider, who would only say, “It’s a web design issue, we cannot help”. When pressed, he told me the Error Log indcated an IFmodule issue.

    I’ve also copied below the htaccess file.

    Csn anyone help? If yes, is more information necessary?

    I would suggest backing up your .htaccess file and then use a fresh one that hasn’t been modified by the plugin.

    And if you say yes to this, will the existing plugins then automatically rewrite what they need when the site is up again?

    I’ve also got the Error Log file content if that of any assistance with your assistance (as you can tell, I’m a content man, not a coding one)

    I am no expert, I am suggesting that you could replace you .htaccess file as a way to quickly determine if that is the reason for your 500 error. DEFINITELY keep a backup. If that fixes your problem then it would help narrow down the problem. You could then piece by piece add back sections of the backed up .htaccess file until you are able to identify the offending piece. I have seen w3 total cache cause this problem on a site of mine, but I had little to no content at the time so I just reinstalled the whole thing including w3 total cache and the problem was solved. My guess is that something went wrong while writing the .htaccess changes. I do not think the plugins will automatically re-write the .htaccess file, you would probably have to de-activate and then re-activate the plugins, but I would be concerned about potential data loss depending on the plugins.

    Thanks man. I deleted everything except the bare minimum, and the site is back up. And I did back up the htaccess file that was the issue.
    Total cache deactivated itself a little, so I’ve just gone in and optimised the settings.

    Everything else looks OK, so fingers crossed.

    Thanks again for your help. After a stressful couple of hours this afternoon, I think it’s time for a quiet beer.
