How do I add a column

Hi I have the theme twenty ten and I only have one column for widgets on the right. Is there any way to add a column without an in depth knowledge of php? I mean I know HTML and CSS but does anyone have detailed instructions on how to add a column on the left of the site for widgets? Thanks for your help
