• I went to the backend of my WP site (2.8.6) and found all plugins were disabled although the actual folders were still there.

I thought it may be some exploit and after searching multiple search phrases on Google, figured it must be something new since the site was ok for several months.

I upgraded to 2.9.1 and the same thing is showing – the plugin folders are there and filled under wp-content/plugins but the Admin Dashboard says it seems I have no plugins enabled/installed.

I did check my Apache access logs and noticed that right before this, there was a GET request from a Pacific Rim country sent to wp-cron, don’t know if that helps any.

  • Could be a hack… could also be something like file permission that got messed up somehow, or a database table in need of repair. Do you trigger anything here?

Thanks for the response but didn’t find anything. I don’t know if it would be the file permissions since we have it fairly locked down with multiple layers for the server – except for the pre-fab software packages like WP.

    Thanks again for the reply.

It would be too strict permissions that would cause the problem, not too lax, so your ‘locked down’ server might have something to do with it.

Did you check your database for errors?

Since you mentioned wp-cron, have you checked your database for suspicious cron jobs?

    Hi Apijdi

Really appreciate your help but after speaking to a few of the law enforcement clients and non-profit clients over the past two days, we’ve been encouraged to change all their sites from WP to Drupal or custom solutions.

Unfortunately, it adds work for us without extra pay (yearly support contracts) but we simply can’t have these episodes where WP works fine for months then, without warning, gives us some gut-wrenching problems.

Thanks again and it’s sincerely appreciated.
