> Since I can’t access the main admin, can I delete the staging site folder and db entries and hope the live site will return?
No, that would be another terrible mistake IMHO and you would mess up more your site.
First of all, you should create a backup if you did not do that already of your entire database by using phpmyadmin. This is not necessary if you follow up staging advice and created a backup of your site, did you?
Are you certain that your only modification was the change of site URL and home?
Changing the staging site home and site URL would not affect your live site so I assume you changed something else on your live site as well.
For instance, did you change the table prefix of the database table in wp-config.php of the main site? Then you should revert that step.
What was the intention to change the site URL and home of the staging site?

Thank you, Rene,
Yes, I had a backup via UpdraftPlus but could only access it through the staging site. I don’t suppose invoking that backup would have been a good idea?
I did get access to the server finally and modified ‘site’ and ‘home’ in the database but that did no good. What worked was deleting the plugin that changed the login url to a custom one. That plugin was not a problem until I messed with the ‘home’ and ‘site’ in the staging site. Nothing would bring back the live site admin except deleting that plugin and using the standard wp-admin suffix to log into the live admin area. From there, Updraft Plus took care of the restore.
Motivation? Desperation and fatigue trying to solve a menu problem. The fatigue caused some confusion. I should have known better. All sorted now. 🙂
I’ll mark this topic as solved if there is no reply necessary.
Thanks for your quick assistance!
I am glad to hear that you solved the issue * hooray *
Just a note: Updraft Plus does not backup custom tables like the wpstg_ ones so I use backwpup which can handle those tables.
I’ll close the ticket for now. Feel free to open it again when you have more another question.
Have a great holiday season
