It copies the files, titles, descriptions, categories, download counts, expiry dates and access settings, and records where each document came from so your old links can keep working.

WordPress Download Manager is a third-party plugin. This plugin is not affiliated with or endorsed by its developers; Trilobita DocVault and this migrator are developed by Trilobita.

Your existing plugin's data and files are never changed: everything is copied, so you can check the result before you switch the old plugin off.

Supported sources:

WordPress Download Manager - on the same site, or on another WordPress install on the same server.

How it works:

Configure - choose the source plugin and where it is installed.

Preview - a dry run checks every package and file and shows what will be imported, what will be skipped and why. Nothing is written.

Migrate - documents are created in batches, with a progress bar. Afterwards you can download a CSV log, or roll the migration back.

What is migrated:

Title, description and excerpt

Files, copied into DocVault and registered as the first version

Tags (WordPress Download Manager)

Categories, with one level of parent category. An existing category with the same slug is reused only if it holds nothing but documents; otherwise a separate "(documents)" category is created, so documents are never mixed into your blog categories.

Download counts

Expiry dates (WordPress Download Manager)

Access settings: public, logged-in users only, or specific user roles

Keep old links working: with Trilobita DocVault 1.6.0 or later, old WordPress Download Manager download links, package, category and tag shortcodes, and package, download, category and tag URLs keep working after migration, without editing your pages. With earlier DocVault versions the documents still migrate, and the old links start working once DocVault is updated, without migrating again.

Multi-file packages: WordPress Download Manager packages can hold several files. Choose one DocVault document per file (recommended), or the first file only.

File types: free DocVault accepts PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, PPTX, ODT, ODS, ODP, RTF, CSV and TXT. The dry run lists any files of other types and says which ones Trilobita DocVault Pro can add (images, ZIP, AI and EPS). DocVault Pro is not required.

Not migrated: email, password, social and form locks, payment, quota and download limit settings, and per-download history (the total count is kept). Packages that use these are noted in the log.

Privacy

The migrator does not send any data to external services. It stores a migration log (document titles, IDs and notes) in your WordPress database, which is removed when you delete the plugin. It does not collect or store personal data about visitors.

Install and activate Trilobita DocVault 1.4.4 or later.

Install and activate Trilobita DocVault Migrator from Plugins > Add New, or upload the
trilobita-docvault-migrator
folder to
/wp-content/plugins/
.

Go to Documents > Migrate to DocVault.

Choose your source, click Connect & Preview, review the dry run, then click Run Migration.

Back up your site before migrating.

Does the migrator change my existing download plugin?

No. It only reads from the source plugin and copies its files. Its data, files and pages are left as they are.

Will my old download links still work?

Yes, with Trilobita DocVault 1.6.0 or later: DocVault uses the information the migrator records to point old links, shortcodes and URLs at the migrated documents. Your pages are not edited.

With an earlier DocVault version, the migration still works and the information is recorded, but old links only start working after you update DocVault to 1.6.0 or later. You do not need to migrate again. The migrator page shows a notice while DocVault is older than 1.6.0.

WordPress Download Manager is on another site. Can I still migrate?

Yes, if both sites are on the same server. Choose "Another WordPress install on this server" and enter the path to that site's WordPress folder (the one containing
wp-config.php
). The migrator reads that site's database connection details from
wp-config.php
, connects to its database to read packages only, and copies the files. The connection details are used only during the request and are never stored, logged or sent to the browser.

Some files were skipped. Why?

The dry run gives a reason for every skipped file: usually the file is missing from disk, or its type is not allowed in DocVault. Files that DocVault Pro could accept are listed separately.

My site has very large files. Will the migration time out?

The migrator works in small batches and ends each batch early once it has run for 20 seconds (less if your server's PHP time limit is lower), then continues in the next request. A single file still has to be copied in one request, so a very large file on a server with a very short time limit can still time out; in that case, ask your host to raise the PHP time limit for the migration.

Can I try it on a few items first?

Yes. On the Configure step, enter a number under Test run to migrate only the first files that are ready to migrate (oldest first; files that cannot be migrated are skipped and do not count). Check the result, then roll the test back before migrating everything, otherwise those files are migrated twice.

Can I undo a migration?

Yes. The final step has a rollback button that deletes the documents and files the migration created. Once no migrated documents of a source plugin are left, it also deletes the empty categories the migration created and the information DocVault used to keep that plugin's old links working. Categories that already existed are kept. Rollback uses the migration log, so keep the migrator installed until you are happy with the result.

What happens if I run the migration twice?

Each run creates new documents, so running it twice creates duplicates. Roll back the first run before running it again.

Are access restrictions kept?

Yes. Public and logged-in-only settings are kept. Role restrictions are kept and enforced by free DocVault; viewing or changing the roles in the document editor needs DocVault Pro.

Can I delete the migrator afterwards?

Yes. Deleting it removes its own settings and log. The documents stay, and so does the source information DocVault uses to keep old links working.

Who can run a migration?

Administrators only (the
manage_options
capability).

1.11.2

Change: the notices shown when Trilobita DocVault is missing or too old now appear only on the Plugins screen, and the one-time access-repair notice can be dismissed.

1.11.1

Change: "Tested up to" is declared in the readme only, as WordPress.org requires.

1.11.0

New: a notice on the migrator page when Trilobita DocVault is older than 1.6.0, explaining that old links start working once DocVault is updated.

Security: source file paths can no longer point outside the WordPress Download Manager upload folder.

Security: the table prefix read from another site's wp-config.php is validated before use.

Fix: malformed data in the source database can no longer stop a preview or migration.

New: records the rules Trilobita DocVault 1.6.0 needs to keep old WordPress Download Manager shortcodes and URLs working. Sites migrated with 1.10.0 to 1.10.2 get them automatically on update.

New: asks for confirmation before migrating from a second site of the same plugin, because old links from two sites can collide.

New: WordPress Download Manager tags are migrated, and old tag shortcodes and tag pages keep working.

New: test run. Migrate only the first few files that are ready to migrate, check the result, roll it back, then migrate everything.

New: rollback also removes the categories the migration created (if empty) and the information DocVault used to keep the old links working, so the site is back to how it was before the migration.

Change: batches end early when a package has very large files, so a migration no longer risks a PHP timeout on shared hosting.

Change: documents are no longer added to an existing category that holds other content, such as blog posts. A separate "(documents)" category is created instead, and the preview tells you which.

Change: requires WordPress 6.5 or later.

Removed: WP Filebase support and the Filebase References page. WP Filebase has not been maintained for years.

Change: code tidy-ups for WordPress.org.

Fix: all admin messages can now be translated.

1.10.2

Security: package data read from the source database can no longer create PHP objects.

1.10.1

New: categories record their original slug, so DocVault can redirect old category URLs.

1.10.0

New: every migrated document and category records its source, so Trilobita DocVault can keep old links, shortcodes and URLs working.

Fix: categories were not migrated on sites where DocVault uses the standard post categories.

Fix: "first file only" migrations recorded incomplete log entries.

Fix: Filebase References could match documents migrated from WordPress Download Manager.

Change: DocVault Pro is no longer required. The dry run shows which skipped file types Pro can add.

1.9.11

Fix: role restrictions from WordPress Download Manager are now saved correctly.
