If a visitor asks something outside it, the bot says so plainly and\npoints them to a contact you configure, instead of guessing.<\/p>\n\n<p>Everything runs inside your own WordPress install. The plugin calls the\nAnthropic API directly from your server using an API key you provide\n(bring-your-own-key). No account, license key or payment is needed, and every\nfeature of the plugin is available to everyone.<\/p>\n\n<p>Separately, 118 West sells an optional \"Bot118 Pro\" add-on plugin (managed AI so you\nneed no Anthropic account, lead capture, sales mode, your own bot image, your own welcome greeting and footer) at\nhttps:\/\/118west.com\/wordpress-plug-in-shop\/ . This plugin works fully without it.<\/p>\n\n<p>The knowledge base rebuilds itself automatically after you publish or update\nindexed content, and the plugin actively watches for an expired or revoked\nAnthropic key so a broken key produces a clear warning in wp-admin instead of a\nsilently broken widget.<\/p>\n\n<h4>External services<\/h4>\n\n<p>This plugin connects to one external service. Please review its terms before use.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anthropic (Claude API)<\/strong> - every\nvisitor question is sent to <code>api.anthropic.com<\/code>, along with a short excerpt of\nyour own site content and your Anthropic API key, to generate an answer. No\nother visitor data is sent. Anthropic Privacy Policy:\nhttps:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/privacy - Terms:\nhttps:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/legal\/commercial-terms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The plugin shows no credit link by default. In Settings you may optionally turn\non a small \"Bot118 by 118 West\" banner under the chat window.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Keeping content current<\/h3>\n\n<p>By default, the knowledge base rebuilds itself automatically about 30\nseconds after you publish or update any indexed content, and once a day as\na safety net (this relies on WordPress's own scheduler, which needs site\nvisits to fire - very low-traffic sites may see a short delay). You can turn\nthis off and rebuild manually instead from Settings &gt; Bot118 Chatbot.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Notes on this version<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Retrieval is simple keyword matching, not semantic embeddings. It works\nwell for direct FAQ-style questions but can miss heavily paraphrased ones.<\/li>\n<li>The chat endpoint is public (any site visitor can use it). To limit bots and\nrunaway usage it requires a short-lived signed token the bundled widget fetches\nwhen the chat is opened, checks the request's origin, rate-limits per visitor,\ncaps messages per conversation, ignores repeated identical questions and\nenforces a configurable daily limit. A determined attacker rotating IP\naddresses can still send some requests; the daily limit bounds the cost.<\/li>\n<li>For a multi-site\/multi-club rollout, each site gets its own install and\nits own settings - this version does not share a knowledge base across sites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<!--section=installation-->\n<ol>\n<li>Upload the <code>bot118-the-ai-chatbot<\/code> folder to <code>\/wp-content\/plugins\/<\/code>, or install the\nzip via Plugins &gt; Add New &gt; Upload Plugin.<\/li>\n<li>Activate the plugin.<\/li>\n<li>Go to Settings &gt; Bot118 Chatbot.<\/li>\n<li>Enter your Anthropic API key (from console.anthropic.com) - when creating that key,\nset its expiration to \"Never\" so it doesn't stop working on its own later.\nStep-by-step guide: https:\/\/118West.com\/b-bot-anthropic-key\/<\/li>\n<li>Set your organization name and a fallback contact (email or phone) for\nquestions the bot can't answer.<\/li>\n<li>Choose which content types to index (e.g. Pages, or a custom \"FAQ\" post\ntype if you have one). Keep this scoped to real help\/policy content -\nindexing your whole blog will produce noisier answers.<\/li>\n<li>Click \"Rebuild Knowledge Base Now\" for the first build.<\/li>\n<li>The chat bubble appears automatically on your site's frontend once a key\nis set and at least one chunk is indexed. No\ntemplate edits needed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<!--section=faq-->\n<dl>\n<dt id=\"do%20i%20need%20my%20own%20anthropic%20api%20key%3F\"><h3>Do I need my own Anthropic API key?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>Yes - the plugin calls Anthropic\ndirectly using a key you create and pay for at console.anthropic.com.\nAnthropic's own usage is typically inexpensive for a single site's FAQ\ntraffic.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id=\"what%20happens%20if%20my%20anthropic%20api%20key%20expires%3F\"><h3>What happens if my Anthropic API key expires?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>The plugin checks your key's status automatically (daily, and immediately\nafter any failed chat request) and will show a warning banner across\nwp-admin plus send you an email if it stops working - instead of the chat\nwidget silently going quiet.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id=\"do%20i%20need%20a%20license%20key%20or%20account%3F\"><h3>Do I need a license key or account?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>No. The plugin is fully functional with just your own Anthropic API key, and\nevery feature is available to everyone.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id=\"what%20visitor%2Fsite%20data%20gets%20sent%20to%20the%20ai%2C%20and%20what%20doesn%27t%3F\"><h3>What visitor\/site data gets sent to the AI, and what doesn't?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>Only two things are sent to Anthropic to generate each answer: the specific\ncontent chunks from your own site that matched the visitor's question (from\nwhichever post types you chose to index), and the visitor's typed message\nplus the recent turns of that same conversation. Nothing else on your site\nis sent - no user accounts, no unindexed content, no data from other\ncustomers' sites.
