If so, you know that driving voter turnout is key to you winning your race. The Your Right Campaign Voter Outreach plugin is an all-in-one solution for organizing your campaign's Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts, including voter canvassing, voter support tracking and voter data management.

Our plugin allows you to import a list of voter records from your local election authority and divide the list into one or more walklists that your campaign staff or volunteers can use to quickly canvass a neighborhood, city or county. With a dedicated volunteer portal, your volunteers know which houses to walk, who is one of your supporters and who can be counted on to vote for you on election day.

Voter Data Management

One of the most powerful features of the Your Right Campaign Voter Outreach plugin is the ability to manage voter data. Via the plugin you can easily import a CSV file from your local election authority of all potential voters. There's no limit on the number of voter records you can handle with this plugin.

Once imported, voters are searchable by name, address, phone, email, walklist, support score and more. You can also easily update voter records, either manually or via new CSV uploads. Our plugin supports de-duplication of voter data so you can keep your database up to date as voter registration records change.

You can also assign each voter a support score, which indicates how likely they are to support your campaign. Using the voter search you can find all strong supporters and remind them to cast their ballot, or find all weak supporters and turn them into strong supporters via targeted outreach. How you use your voter data is up to you!

Customizable Walklists for Door-To-Door Outreach

One of the most powerful ways to get voters to vote is to show up at their door and ask them directly for their support. Our Your Right Campaign plugin makes it easy to create custom walklists and assign them to one or more volunteers for targeted outreach, right at your voter's homes.

Simply search your voters and add them to a customized walklist. Then, add your volunteers to the walklist and they can access it on a dedicated volunteer portal right on your website!

Campaign Volunteer Portal

The volunteer portal lives on your website and guides your volunteers through their voter outreach efforts. Each volunteer can view each walklist that they are assigned to as well as all voter records associated with that walklist. As your volunteers walk the list, they can log each contact with a voter, including whether the voter pledged support for your campaign, whether the voter has requested a mail in ballot, whether the voter has any custom comments or concerns and more!

The volunteer portal is designed to be easy for your canvassers to use on a mobile phone or tablet. When walking a walklist, voter contacts are logged via AJAX requests, meaning the portal doesn't have to refresh for every update. As your canvassers update voter records, the data updates in real-time and voters are marked as green to indicate that they've been contacted in the last 24 hours.

The volunteer portal also offers powerful voter search features, including the ability to search voters by name or address, last contact time and vote status. Canvassers can also view voters by even or odd addresses, so a team of canvassers can easily divide up a street based on addresses.

All Plugin Features

Import voter data from a CSV file and map fields from the CSV to the database using custom mappings.

Powerful search functionality for finding voters by name, address, vote status, support score, precinct, walklist and more.

Manually add a voter right from the WordPress dashboard.

View a voter's profile, including all contact information as well as all contacts logged by your volunteers.

Voter address and contact information is encrypted in your database for additional security of voter data.

Custom portal for volunteers to walk a walklist and log voter contacts, view voter contact details and update voter records.

Ability to set the country to United States or Canada, making the plugin valuable for multiple types of elections. When switched to Canada, the plugin uses Canadian-specific terminology for locations (eg: Province, Post Code) and voting status.

Voter record de-duplication by name, email, phone or address.

Custom user roles for GOTV Volunteers, Managers and Administrators that let others manage your campaign without having access to the rest of your WordPress website.

Disclosure of Third Party Licenses

This plugin uses the Inter font, which is licensed under the Open Font License.

The font is hosted locally on your website and does not use the Google Fonts web service. The font is only loaded within the volunteer portal.

This plugin also uses select locally-hosted SVG icons from Heroicons, which are licensed under the MIT License.

Privacy and Data Handling

This plugin stores and manages voter-related information in the WordPress database for campaign and volunteer workflow purposes. The data may include:
- first and last name
- street address
- city, state/province, ZIP/postal code
- phone number
- email address
- voting status and support scores
- notes and contact history related to outreach activities

Where voter data is stored

The plugin stores voter information in custom database tables created by the plugin on activation. The data is intended for use within the site administrator and campaign workflow and is not intended to be published publicly. Voter data lives solely on your server.

Security measures

Sensitive fields such as email, phone, and street address are encrypted before storage. Blind one-way hashes are also used for exact-match lookups and deduplication. Access to voter records is restricted to users with the appropriate plugin capabilities and roles.

By default, the encryption key for your voter data is stored in the WordPress database. While this approach is better than no encryption at all, it is highly recommended that you use either a constant or environment variable inside of wp-config.php to store your encryption key separate from your database for a higher level of security. For more information please see the "How can I set an encryption key inside of wp-config.php for my voter data?" FAQ item below.

An HTTPS (SSL/TLS) connection is strictly required on your website to ensure data transmitted between mobile canvassers and the volunteer portal is encrypted in transit.

Who can access the voter data

Access is limited to authorized WordPress users with the plugin permissions required to view, manage, import, or assign voter records. The plugin does not expose voter records publicly on the front end.

Data retention

The plugin does not automatically delete voter records after a fixed period. Voter records remain in the database until:
- They are manually deleted by an administrator.
- They are removed during a cleanup or import process.
- The plugin is removed via the plugin deletion functionality built into WordPress when the Save Plugin Data on Deletion toggle is not enabled.

User responsibility

Site owners and campaign administrators are responsible for:
- Complying with applicable privacy laws and election-related regulations.
- Obtaining any required consent or disclosures before collecting and storing personal voter data.
- Ensuring access to stored data is limited to authorized users.
- Configuring retention and deletion practices to match their organization’s policies.

Waiver of Liability

This software is provided 'AS IS', without warranty of any kind, express or implied. The plugin developers and Your Right Website LLC assume no liability for unauthorized access, data breaches, or server misconfigurations on the host website.

Prerequisites

WordPress 7.0 or later

PHP 8.1 or later

Plugin Installation and Configuration

Upload the plugin files to the
/wp-content/plugins/your-right-campaign-voter-outreach
directory, or install the plugin through the WordPress plugins screen directly.

Activate the plugin through the 'Plugins' screen in WordPress.

Configure the URL and welcome message for your voter volunteer portal under
Your Right Campaign > Settings
, or use the default welcome message and portal URL of
yoursite.com/volunteer-portal
.

If you wish to use an optional encryption key stored in your wp-config.php file, please see the corresponding FAQ item for this feature.

How do I import my voter registration data?

You can import voter data from the
Your Right Campaign > Import Voters
menu. You will need to have your voter data in a CSV file.

Once you upload your voter data CSV, you will be asked to map your CSV's fields to the internal fields used by the Your Right Campaign plugin. The first name, last name, address, city and zip (postal) code fields are required. In addition, you can map other data such as voter phone, email, precinct code, external voter id and more to the internal fields provided by the Your Right Campaign plugin.

Once you have mapped your fields, the plugin will begin importing your CSV file data. This process is pretty quick, with the plugin being able to import a test file containing 65,000 records in about five minutes.

How do I assign volunteers to my campaign?

To add volunteers to your campaign, they first must have a WordPress user account. If your site does not allow open registrations, create a user for each volunteer under the
Users
section of WordPress.

For each user, assign them a GOTV related role.

The GOTV Volunteer usergroup is allowed to view voter data, as well as edit voter data for any voter who is assigned to one of their walklists.

The GOTV Manager role can view and edit any voter, as well as create walklists, assign volunteers to walklists and import voter data.

The GOTV Administrator role is allowed to access all voter data as well as all setting for the
Your Right Campaign
plugin.

These roles cannot edit other parts of your WordPress website, such as your posts or content. If you need to allow a user to edit your website content and GOTV data, you may need to install a plugin that allows for multiple usergroups in WordPress. Additionally, site administrators always have access to all GOTV settings and voter data.

Once your volunteers have an account, you need to add them to a walklist. Go to
Your Right Campaign > Walk Lists
and create a walk list. Then select any volunteers who you want to have access to that walk list.

Once your volunteers log into WordPress, guide them to your volunteer portal so they can begin walking their lists. By default, the portal lives at
yourdomain.com/volunteer-portal
but this URL can be changed under
Your Right Campaign > Settings
.

How do I add voters to a walklist?

First, ensure that you have created at least one walklist under
Your Right Campaign > Walk Lists
. Then search for voters who belong on the list by going to
Your Right Campaign > Search Voters
. The Your Right Campaign plugin does not supply any voter data, you must bring your own. Voter data should be in CSV format to ensure compatibility with the Your Right Campaign plugin.

Users are solely responsible for ensuring that their acquisition, import, and use of voter registration lists strictly comply with all applicable local, state, and federal election laws and state board of election usage agreements.

How can I set an encryption key inside of wp-config.php for my voter data?

Because the Your Right Campaign plugin encrypts some voter data, you may wish to configure a custom encryption key inside of your wp-config.php file. By default, the plugin will automatically generate and store your encryption key and salt in the WordPress database, but you can save this in wp-config.php instead. This step is completely optional, but may provide increased security for voter records.

To use a custom encryption key, you'll want to generate a 64 character long hex encryption key. You can generate a key from a PHP command line using this command:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
php -r "echo bin2hex(random_bytes(32)) . PHP_EOL;"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You'll need to generate two keys, one for the encryption key and one for the encryption salt.

Before you add any voter data, you'll want to update your wp-config.php file with two new constants,
YRCVO_ENCRYPTION_KEY
and
YRCVO_HMAC_SALT
.

Your values should look like those below:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

/* Custom constants for GOTV voter data encryption */
define( 'YRCVO_ENCRYPTION_KEY', '67229b55f6f9e62763d492b16d52ea66922022ef36dd50d5495c1a1b9cef2b72' );
define( 'YRCVO_HMAC_SALT', '75c6b8af78d21a84a06b154ffae1d3c60b3e5502aa1864f5b5c208be4ed02f8b' );

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are unable to generate an encryption key using the command listed above, you can use any value for the encryption key and salt, however this will be significantly weaker than using a properly generated bin2hex key.

For the highest level of security, we recommend using a server environment variable for storage of your encryption key and salt. This approach will provide the best protection of voter data.

Do not lose your key as without it you will be unable to decrypt your voter data! Your Right Website LLC is not responsible for data loss or unrecoverable voter records resulting from lost encryption keys, misplaced salts, or improper server migration.

Where can I get more help using this plugin?

We are currently building a Plugin Manual to help answer all your questions.
