Visitors switch between light and dark with a toggle; site owners decide where dark mode applies and how it looks.

Dark mode can be enabled for the frontend, the admin panel, the Block Editor and the Classic Editor independently. You can darken the editor while the rest of the dashboard stays light, or the reverse.

Styling is applied through configurable rules at runtime, so no theme files are edited and no custom code is required. Settings live in a single admin panel and can be exported and imported between sites.

Switching between light and dark

Manual toggle – a floating switch, a menu item, a shortcode, or any element matched by a CSS selector.

Default dark mode – load the site dark on first visit, with light mode still available.

OS-aware – follow the visitor's system preference.

Time-based – switch automatically between a chosen "from" and "to" time, based on the visitor's local clock.

Keyboard shortcut – Ctrl + Alt + D by default; any combination can be recorded in its place.

The switch

5 floating switch designs, with a choice of screen corner and its own margin controls.

Adjustable size, colors, icons and border.

Optional attention animation, including a pulse effect.

Separate visibility, position and spacing settings for mobile.

The shortcode switch can inherit the global settings or be styled on its own.

Colors and content

5 dark color presets, each with adjustable background colors.

Separate color presets for the admin panel and the Block Editor. Both default to Auto, which derives a shade per color on screen instead of forcing a single background and text color, so admin screens added by other plugins stay readable without being configured first.

Image brightness, contrast and grayscale controls.

Video brightness and grayscale controls.

Optional dark scrollbar styling.

Same-origin iframes are styled directly; cross-origin embeds are notified of theme changes so they can follow along if they support it.

Working in the settings panel

Live preview of your own site with unsaved settings applied, in desktop and mobile views, with a refresh control and a full screen mode.

Settings search with Ctrl + K (Cmd + K on macOS).

Reset a single section or every setting, each behind a confirmation step.

Export settings to a file and import them elsewhere.

Optional removal of all plugin data from the database on uninstall.

Compatibility

Darkfic uses standard theme markup rather than theme-specific rules, so it does not need per-theme configuration in most cases. It has been used with block themes, classic themes, WooCommerce. It is translation-ready and works on multisite, network-wide or per site. Hooks and filters are available for developers who want to extend it.

Themes and builders vary widely. Darkfic is built to work with the markup they output, but results can differ from theme to theme.

Third-Party Libraries

Darkfic bundles Dark Reader, which renders dark mode in the WordPress admin. It is licensed under the MIT License, which is compatible with this plugin's GPLv2-or-later license. The full copyright and permission notice is included in
assets/vendor/darkreader.js
.

Dark Reader runs entirely in the browser on the pages you are already viewing. It makes no network requests of its own and sends nothing anywhere. It is a bundled library, not an external service.

From the WordPress dashboard

Go to Plugins > Add New.

Search for Darkfic Dark Mode.

Install and activate.

Manual upload

Download darkfic.zip.

Go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.

Select darkfic.zip and click Install Now.

Activate the plugin.

Manual install over FTP

Download darkfic.zip and extract it.

Upload the
darkfic
folder to
/wp-content/plugins/
.

Activate the plugin from the Plugins screen.

After activation

Open the Darkfic menu in the admin sidebar and configure the settings.

Can I enable dark mode only for the admin dashboard?

Yes.
