See \"Custom events\" below.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AI crawler visibility<\/strong> \u2014 how often known AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot,\nPerplexityBot, and others) visit your site, separate from human traffic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h4>What is NEVER stored?<\/h4>\n\n<ul>\n<li>No IP addresses<\/li>\n<li>No tracking cookies \u2014 the session ID lives only in the browser's\n  sessionStorage and disappears as soon as the tab is closed. The only\ncookie this plugin can ever set is the optional opt-out cookie described\nbelow, and only if you or a visitor chooses to set it.<\/li>\n<li>No browser fingerprinting<\/li>\n<li>No full referrer URLs \u2014 only the domain (e.g. \"google.com\"), never the\npath or a search query that might be contained in it<\/li>\n<li>No data sent to external parties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h4>How does it work technically?<\/h4>\n\n<p>On every page view, a small, first-party JavaScript file (<code>assets\/tracker.js<\/code>)\nsends an AJAX request to your own <code>admin-ajax.php<\/code>. That request contains the\npage URL, page title, a random session ID, and \u2014 only on the first page view\nof a session \u2014 the hostname of the referring site and any UTM parameters.\nWhen the page is left, the time on page is sent afterwards via\n    navigator.sendBeacon.<\/p>\n\n<p>This data ends up in the following tables in your WordPress database:<\/p>\n\n<ol>\n<li><code>wp_milkstats_pageviews<\/code> \u2014 daily totals per page. Kept indefinitely: just\ncounts, no session information.<\/li>\n<li><code>wp_milkstats_session_events<\/code> \u2014 individual page views per session, with\ntime on page. Automatically deleted after the configured retention\nperiod.<\/li>\n<li><code>wp_milkstats_sessions<\/code> \u2014 one row per session with the traffic source\n(first-touch attribution). Also cleaned up after the retention period.<\/li>\n<li><code>wp_milkstats_events<\/code> \u2014 custom events (outbound link clicks, downloads,\nmanual events). Cleaned up after the retention period, same as session\ndata.<\/li>\n<li><code>wp_milkstats_device_stats<\/code> \u2014 daily aggregated device\/browser\/OS counts.\nKept indefinitely, like page totals \u2014 never traceable to an individual.<\/li>\n<li><code>wp_milkstats_ai_crawler_hits<\/code> \u2014 daily aggregated hits from known AI\ncrawlers. Kept indefinitely, like page totals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>A daily WP-Cron job cleans up session data older than the configured\nretention period. Page totals are never deleted. Bots are recognized and\nignored based on the User-Agent.<\/p>\n\n<h4>Custom events<\/h4>\n\n<p>Besides page views, MilkStats also measures events, without any\nconfiguration needed:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outbound links<\/strong> \u2014 a click on a link to another domain is automatically\nrecorded, with the domain as the label.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Downloads<\/strong> \u2014 a click on a link to a file with a known download\nextension (pdf, zip, docx, xlsx, and more) is automatically recorded, with\nthe file name as the label.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manual events<\/strong> \u2014 add the <code>data-milkstats-event=\"label\"<\/code> attribute to a\nlink, button or <code>&lt;form&gt;<\/code> to track that click or submission as a custom\nevent, for example:\n  <a href=\"#\">Request a quote<\/a>\nor <code>&lt;form data-milkstats-event=\"Contact form submitted\"&gt;\u2026&lt;\/form&gt;<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Events count if the visitor is not excluded (see Settings) and are shown on\nthe statistics page under \"Events\", with the top labels per type.<\/p>\n\n<h4>Excluding yourself (opt-out)<\/h4>\n\n<p>Besides the role exclusion (only works while logged in), you can also\nexclude yourself \u2014 or an external tester \u2014 without logging in:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Via the admin bar<\/strong> \u2014 administrators see a MilkStats item at the top\n(\"tracking on\"\/\"tracking off\") to flip this with one click.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Via a link<\/strong> \u2014 visit <code>?milkstats_optout=1<\/code> to exclude yourself, or\n  ?milkstats_optout=0 to be counted again. Also works while logged out,\nhandy to share with external testers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Via the settings page<\/strong> \u2014 a button (\"Exclude my visits in this browser\")\nshowing the current status.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>This sets a first-party cookie (<code>milkstats_optout<\/code>) in that one browser. The\ncookie itself has no tracking purpose \u2014 purely a toggle \u2014 and works alongside\nthe role exclusion, not instead of it.<\/p>\n\n<h4>Settings<\/h4>\n\n<p>Under <strong>Site Analytics \u2192 Settings<\/strong> you can configure:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Excluded roles<\/strong> \u2014 which user roles are never counted (default:\nadministrator, editor, author, contributor)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exclude yourself<\/strong> \u2014 a button to exclude your own visits in the current\nbrowser, even while logged out (see \"Excluding yourself\" above)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Member segment<\/strong> \u2014 optional: which role(s) should be counted separately\nas a \"logged-in segment\" (e.g. members, clients, subscribers), with a\ncustom name for that segment in the statistics. Up to three additional\nnamed segments can be configured, each pickable from a dropdown on the\nstatistics page.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Retention period<\/strong> \u2014 after how many days session data (time on page,\nnavigation paths, sources) is automatically deleted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h4>Where do I see the statistics?<\/h4>\n\n<ul>\n<li>A compact overview on the WordPress dashboard (widget)<\/li>\n<li>A full statistics page under <strong>Site Analytics<\/strong> in the main menu, with a\nrolling period filter (7\/30\/90\/365 days) plus a calendar period picker\n(today\/yesterday, this\/last week, this\/last month, this\/last quarter,\nthis\/last year), bar chart, top pages, navigation paths, source breakdown,\ndevice\/browser\/OS breakdown, and AI crawler visibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h4>Credits<\/h4>\n\n<p>The admin screens use the <a href=\"https:\/\/rsms.me\/inter\/\">Inter<\/a> typeface by Rasmus\nAndersson, bundled with the plugin under the SIL Open Font License 1.1\n(<code>assets\/fonts\/OFL.txt<\/code>). It is served from your own site \u2014 never from an\nexternal font CDN.<\/p>\n\n<!--section=installation-->\n<ol>\n<li>Upload the <code>milkstats<\/code> folder to <code>\/wp-content\/plugins\/<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>Activate the plugin via <strong>Plugins<\/strong> in WordPress.<\/li>\n<li>Go to <strong>Site Analytics \u2192 Settings<\/strong> to set roles, segment and retention\nperiod as needed \u2014 the default settings also work fine without changes.<\/li>\n<li>View your statistics under <strong>Site Analytics<\/strong> in the main menu.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<!--section=faq-->\n<dl>\n<dt id=\"is%20this%20plugin%20gdpr-compliant%20without%20a%20cookie%20banner%3F\"><h3>Is this plugin GDPR-compliant without a cookie banner?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>Yes. No tracking cookies are placed, no IP addresses are stored, and no data\nis shared with third parties. The session ID is generated in the browser\nitself, lives only in <code>sessionStorage<\/code> (not persistent), and cannot be traced\nback to an individual. See \"Excluding yourself (opt-out)\" above.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id=\"does%20this%20work%20with%20caching%20plugins%3F\"><h3>Does this work with caching plugins?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>For regular visitor statistics, yes: that tracking runs via a separate AJAX\nrequest after the page loads, so a cached page is still counted correctly.\nThe AI crawler report is an exception: that runs server-side (WordPress must\nactually run to see a visit), so visits from AI crawlers to fully cached\npages (e.g. a \"supercached\" page with WP Super Cache) are missed in that\nreport.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id=\"what%20happens%20to%20my%20data%20if%20i%20deactivate%20or%20delete%20milkstats%3F\"><h3>What happens to my data if I deactivate or delete MilkStats?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>Deactivating the plugin (from the Plugins screen) leaves all data untouched\n\u2014 your tables and settings are still there if you reactivate later.\nDeleting the plugin (via \"Delete\" on the Plugins screen, which runs its\n    uninstall.php) permanently removes every MilkStats database table (page\nviews, sessions, session events, device stats, custom events, AI crawler\nhits) and every MilkStats setting. This cannot be undone, so export any data\nyou want to keep (see the Export dashboard (.html)\/CSV buttons on the\nstatistics page) before deleting the plugin.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id=\"can%20i%20use%20this%20on%20multiple%20sites%3F\"><h3>Can I use this on multiple sites?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>Yes, the plugin is deliberately kept generic: every site-specific choice\n(roles, segment, retention period) is configurable, not hardcoded.<\/p><\/dd>\n\n<\/dl>\n\n<!--section=changelog-->\n<h4>1.8.0<\/h4>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Existing installs of the older \"Pion Analytics\" plugin (and its interim\n\"AVG Proof Site Analytics\" release) are now upgraded to MilkStats\nautomatically on activation, without losing any historical data. The\nexisting page-view and session tables are renamed into place (never\ncopied, so nothing is duplicated or left orphaned), the old Dutch\nvisitor\/member labels are converted to the format MilkStats uses, and the\nprevious plugin's scheduled cleanup task is removed. Unlike the rolling\nfilter, these are calendar-aligned (e.g. \"last month\" is always the full\nprevious calendar month, not the last 30 days).<\/li>\n<li>Period-over-period comparison now also works for calendar periods.
