## Description

Caretta is an AI chat assistant for WordPress and WooCommerce. It reads your site,
then answers the questions your visitors ask: delivery times, returns, sizes, opening
hours, whether a product is in stock, what a service includes. We are WAPI, the
team that builds and runs it, and this plugin is how we connect Caretta to your
WordPress site.

Most support questions on a small site are the same twenty questions. They arrive
after you close, on a phone, from someone who is one answer away from ordering.
A contact form asks that person to wait until tomorrow. We built Caretta because
tomorrow is usually too late.

#### What you get

Your visitors get an answer in seconds, in the language they wrote in, drawn from
your own content rather than from something generic. You get a record of what they
asked, and a short list of the questions your site does not answer well yet.

Setup takes a few minutes. There is no model to train, no flowchart of replies to
draw, no script to paste into your theme. You connect your account, choose where
the assistant should appear, and it starts working from what you have already published.

#### Answers that come from your site

Caretta reads your pages, posts and, on a WooCommerce store, your products. When
someone asks about shipping, the answer comes from your shipping page, not from
a general idea of how shipping works. Prices and stock come from your catalogue.

When your site does not cover something, the assistant says so rather than inventing
an answer. We would rather it admit a gap than send a customer away with a confident
mistake.

#### Your unanswered questions, collected for you

Every question the assistant could not answer goes into the Gaps list in your admin,
sorted by how often it was asked. Repeats raise a counter instead of adding another
row, so you can see at a glance what people keep asking about.

You reply once, in your own words. Your answer is saved in WordPress as a knowledge
card and sent to the assistant, which uses it from then on. Those cards stay in
your site even if you stop the service.

#### Built for WooCommerce stores

On a store, the assistant answers with your real product names, prices and stock
status, and shows the product in the chat with a link straight to it. Products you
publish or edit later reach the assistant on their own, so the answers do not go
stale after a price change.

#### It fits the site it sits on

Choose the accent colour, the title in the header, and the corner it sits in. Decide
where it appears: the whole site, the front page only, certain kinds of content,
or a list of pages you pick, with exceptions where you want them. Until a visitor
clicks, it is a small button.

#### Three languages in the window, more in the answers

The chat window is available in English, Turkish and German and follows the visitor’s
browser unless you choose one yourself. The assistant answers in whatever language
the visitor writes in. The plugin’s own screens are in English, with a Turkish translation
included.

#### Your key never appears in your pages

Most chat plugins print a key into the page and let the visitor’s browser talk to
the vendor. We do it the other way round: messages go to your own site first, and
your site passes them on. The key stays on your server, so nobody can copy it out
of your page source and spend your credit somewhere else.

#### What it costs

The plugin is free. Caretta itself is our paid service, so you need a WAPI account
with credit on it. Current pricing is on https://wapiso.com/caretta-assistant

#### About the name

Caretta is our own product, published here by us. The WordPress.org account behind
this plugin, the plugin itself and https://wapiso.com belong to the same company.
Caretta is the name of the loggerhead sea turtle, which is where the name and the
logo come from. We are not connected to, endorsed by, or affiliated with any other
product, service or company using a similar name.

WooCommerce is a trademark of Automattic Inc. This plugin works with WooCommerce
but is not affiliated with or endorsed by Automattic.

### External services

This plugin talks to two services outside your site. Here is what each one receives.

#### 1. Caretta, our assistant service, at wapiso.com

The plugin is the WordPress half of Caretta. Without the service there is nothing
to answer with.

Your site’s server, not the visitor’s browser, sends us:

 * Each time a visitor opens the chat or writes a message: the message, a random
identifier the plugin creates for that visitor, the identifier of the conversation,
the address of the page the chat was opened on, the language, and your key. As
with any request over the internet, your server’s address reaches us, and so
   does the visitor’s.
 * While you use the plugin’s screens: connecting your account, testing the connection,
reading your knowledge base and your unanswered questions, and sending the answers
   you write.
 * If WooCommerce is active: your published products, from the moment you connect
your account, so the assistant can answer about what you sell. We receive the
product name, price, link, stock status and image address. Products you add or
change afterwards follow, and deleted ones are removed. This begins with the
connection rather than a separate setting, and disconnecting ends it.

Nothing is sent before you connect an account or enter a key.

#### 2. Cloudflare Turnstile, bot protection, currently off

Turnstile is Cloudflare’s way of telling people apart from bots. The chat can use
it, so we document it here even though it does not run today.

It would only load if our service asked for it, and our service has not asked since
June 2026. No request reaches Cloudflare, and nothing of Cloudflare’s is added to
your pages. We keep this section because we could switch the protection back on
without changing the plugin.

If it were on, the visitor’s browser would load Cloudflare’s checker, and Cloudflare
would receive what it needs to score the visit: the visitor’s address, details of
their browser and device, and how they behave on the page.

### Source code

For developers. Nothing here is hidden or scrambled: the PHP ships as written, and
the chat widget’s full source, its build script and its pinned dependencies ship
in the `widget-src` folder inside the plugin. To rebuild the widget, run `npm ci`
in that folder and then `CARETTA_EMBED_OUT=../assets/embed npm run build`; `npm
run check` runs the tests on their own.

## Installation

 1. In WordPress, open **Plugins → Add New**, search for “Caretta AI Assistant” and
    install it.
 2. Activate it. A **Caretta** item appears in your admin menu.
 3. Open **Caretta → Settings** and press **Connect**. Sign in to your WAPI account
in the window that opens; your site is added and its key is created for you.
 4. Tick **Show the widget on the site** and save.
 5. Open your site in another tab and ask the assistant something your site answers.

The two cards at the top of the settings screen tell you whether the assistant is
ready. If one of them is unhappy, it says what to change.

If you do not have an account yet, create one at https://wapiso.com/caretta-assistant
and come back to step 3.

## FAQ

### Where does the assistant get its answers?

From your own site. Caretta reads your pages and posts and, on a WooCommerce store,
your products, and answers from that. When it is unsure it says so and puts the
question in your Gaps list instead of guessing.

### Do I need an account, and is the plugin free?

The plugin is free and stays free. Caretta is our paid service, so you need a WAPI
account with credit on it. Pricing is on https://wapiso.com/caretta-assistant

### How long does setup take?

A few minutes. Install, connect, tick one box. The assistant starts from what your
site already publishes, so there is nothing to train and no answers to write up
front.

### Which languages does it work in?

Visitors get answers in the language they write in. The chat window itself is available
in English, Turkish and German and follows the visitor’s browser unless you set
one. The plugin’s admin screens are in English, with a Turkish translation.

### Will it slow my site down?

No. The assistant loads after your page, from your own site, and stays a small button
until someone clicks it. It fetches nothing from anywhere else as the service is
set up today; the one thing that could, Cloudflare’s bot check, is covered under
External services and is switched off.

### Can I choose which pages it appears on?

Yes. Show it across the site, or limit it to the front page, to certain kinds of
content, or to pages you list yourself. You can also exclude single pages, hide
it on phones, or show it only to logged-in or logged-out visitors.

### Does it work with WooCommerce?

Yes, and it is built for it. Once you connect your account on a store, your published
products reach the assistant, which then answers with real names, prices and stock
status and shows the product in the chat with a link. New and edited products follow
automatically. Nothing is sent before you connect, and disconnecting stops it.

### What happens to the conversations?

They are kept in your WAPI account, where you can read them. Your WordPress database
keeps the counts and the unanswered questions; the chats themselves are not stored
there.

### Can visitors see my key?

No. It stays on your server. Your pages carry nothing that looks like a key, because
the assistant expects it from your site rather than from the page.

### Can I take over and answer someone myself?

Yes. You can step into a conversation from your WAPI account, and the visitor keeps
writing in the same window.

### What if the assistant answers something wrong?

Write the correct answer as a knowledge card under **Caretta → Knowledge Base**.
Cards you write take priority over what the assistant drew from your pages, and
they apply from the next question on.

### The assistant is not showing. What should I check?

Open **Caretta → Settings**. The two cards at the top say which half is missing:
an account that is not connected, or the “Plain” permalink setting, which stops
the assistant from reaching WordPress. Any other permalink setting fixes the second
one.

### I hid it on phones, but it still appears

That setting reads the browser the visitor is using. If your site serves one saved
copy of a page to everyone, that copy is what visitors get, phone or not. A cache
that keeps a separate copy for phones solves it.

### Can I remove it later?

Yes. Untick “Show the widget on the site” to hide it, or disconnect the account
to stop the service. The knowledge cards you wrote stay in WordPress.

## Changelog

#### 1.3.6

 * Rewrote the plugin page in our own words, with more detail on what the assistant
does, what it costs and what leaves your site.

#### 1.3.5

 * The plugin’s own screens and its description now say WAPI, and the description
says what the assistant does instead of how it is wired. The Turkish translation
   follows.

#### 1.3.4

 * The readme now speaks to the person installing the plugin. The publisher is WAPI
throughout, and the technical detail that only a developer needed has gone.

#### 1.3.3

 * Two sentences credited the company where they meant the assistant.

#### 1.3.2

 * Screenshot captions rewritten in plain language.

#### 1.3.1

 * The description, installation steps and questions are written for the person
installing the plugin rather than the person who built it: what the assistant
does, what it costs, and what leaves your site. How WooCommerce products reach
the assistant is now described the way it actually works.

#### 1.3.0

 * The plugin is now called Caretta AI Assistant.
 * The chat widget’s full source ships inside the plugin, as the readme has always
   said it should.

#### 1.2.2

 * Whether the assistant can reach WordPress is now established by asking, instead
of guessing from your permalink setting. Guessing hid a widget that worked.

#### 1.2.1

 * The chat now uses the copy of the widget that ships with the plugin, so it starts
at full speed without waiting on anything.

#### 1.2.0

 * The plugin carries its publisher’s name, and its translations moved with it.
 * It no longer writes to your server’s configuration, and no longer needs Apache.
Sites on the “Plain” permalink setting now get a clear explanation instead of
   a widget that silently fails.
 * Nothing that looks like a key appears in your pages any more.
 * The chat widget’s full source and its build script ship with the plugin.
 * Every outside service the plugin and the widget can reach is documented, including
   the dormant Cloudflare bot check.

#### 1.1.6

 * Tidied how the plugin’s database queries are documented for WordPress’s own checker.

#### 1.1.5

 * Same, for the part of the plugin that stores your knowledge base.

#### 1.1.4

 * Translations load the way modern WordPress expects, the short description is
shorter, and admin messages follow the standard pattern.

#### 1.1.3

 * Brought the plugin in line with WordPress coding standards for redirects, incoming
   data and form checks.

#### 1.1.2

 * Updates come from WordPress.org; the plugin no longer checks for its own.
 * The chat widget ships inside the package, so nothing is downloaded while your
   site runs.

#### 1.1.1

 * Tidied the package: no development leftovers.

#### 1.1.0

 * English is now the base language, with a Turkish translation included.
 * Admin screens share one layout.
 * WooCommerce products go to the assistant right after you connect.
 * Product links accept only your own domain, and product images are sent as links,
   never uploaded.

#### 1.0.0

 * First release.
