How It Works

Here’s how the TaxJar Smart Sales Tax API works.

TaxJar takes the following input from your store:

  • Seller’s home state, city, and zip code
  • Transaction amount
  • The city, state, and zip code where item is being shipped
  • Any shipping fees charged

And returns an accurate sales tax rate (including state, county, city, and special taxes) based on

  • Seller’s nexus based on your WooCommerce ship from settings
  • Any nexus with other addresses stored in your TaxJar account
  • Local sales tax sourcing laws (origin-based or destination-based)
  • Shipping taxability laws (shipping is not taxable in every state)

TaxJar for WooCommerce automatically determines

  • Nexus
  • Origin vs. Destination sourcing
  • Shipping taxability
  • Sales tax rate (state county, city, special)

Reviews

Really Good System, but not perfect

Taxjar is a great program. It allows me to auto-file my taxes and saves me money by not having to pay my accountant additional fees. I highly recommend it. However, it’s not without flaws. From time to time, the program disconnects from wordpress without any clear reason, and I have to manually reconnect it or contact support. I’m hoping that this is fixed in the future. Thanks, Taxjar!

Works for us!

Great plugin to manage taxes. Been using it for about a year now and their support has been great!

Avoid

Doesn’t support WooCommerce subscriptions or any other third party plugins and has heaps of bugs.

AVOID ! Taxjar crippled my website after deleting the plugin

I ran the trial version of Taxjar. But after I deleted this plugin , Woocommerce lost the ability to show or charge taxes for my website . Basically , Taxjar acted like malware ( and now they expect me to pay them a monthly subscription to fix the damage they caused ??? ) I’ll need to ask Woocommerce for troubleshooting assistance now to determine how badly Taxjar messed up my site . AVOID !

Simple and easy to configure

The TaxJar plugin is awesome. Very simple setup. Easy to configure and at a reasonable price after the 30 day trial. The manual tax rate table was so overwhelming and we worried about making mistakes setting it up and maintaining it as rates change. This plugin really keeps that worry away. Very happy with how it talks to the Woocommerce backend. So far we’ve used it for 18 months and had no problems.
