## Description

Translation Assistant helps site administrators translate WordPress posts from one
WPML language to another using the OpenAI API.

The plugin is designed for sites that already use WPML Multilingual CMS. You choose
a source language, a target language, and the publication status of the translated
post. Translation Assistant sends the content to OpenAI for translation, creates
the translated WordPress post, and associates it with the original post in WPML.

The WordPress.org edition supports manual bulk translation using the local translation
queue. A separate Premium add-on can provide additional functionality such as scheduled
automations. Premium code is not included in this WordPress.org plugin.

#### Requirements

 * WordPress 6.5 or later.
 * PHP 7.4 or later.
 * WPML Multilingual CMS installed and active.
 * An OpenAI API key supplied by the site administrator.
 * An OpenAI account with API access. OpenAI API usage may incur charges from OpenAI.

#### External services

Translation Assistant uses the OpenAI API to translate content.

When you start a translation, content from the selected WordPress post is sent to
OpenAI so that OpenAI can return translated text. Depending on the content of your
post, this may include the post title, body content, excerpt, and other text that
Translation Assistant needs to translate.

The request is made only after the site administrator configures an OpenAI API key
and starts or configures translation through the plugin.

This service is provided by OpenAI and is subject to OpenAI’s terms and privacy
policy:

 * OpenAI: https://openai.com/
 * Terms of Use: https://openai.com/policies/terms-of-use/
 * Privacy Policy: https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy/

Translation Assistant also integrates with WPML Multilingual CMS installed on the
same WordPress site. WPML is a separate product and is not bundled with this plugin.

 * WPML: https://wpml.org/

#### Translation safety

Before starting a translation, Translation Assistant checks the WPML state of the
selected article. If a translation already exists, or if WPML Translation Management
is already processing that language, Translation Assistant can stop the operation
to help avoid duplicate translations.

## FAQ

### Does Translation Assistant work without WPML?

No. Translation Assistant uses WPML to identify languages and associate translated
posts with their source posts.

### Do I need an OpenAI API key?

Yes. You provide your own OpenAI API key in the plugin settings.

### Is OpenAI usage included with the plugin?

No. OpenAI is an independent external service. API usage and any related charges
are managed through your OpenAI account.

### What data is sent to OpenAI?

When a translation is requested, the text required to translate the selected WordPress
content is sent to the OpenAI API. See the External services section for details.

### Can translated posts be created as drafts?

Yes. You can choose the publication status used for newly created translations.

### What happens if WPML is already translating the article?

Translation Assistant can block the operation and ask you to cancel the in-progress
WPML translation before starting the same translation with Translation Assistant.

### Is there a Premium edition?

A separate Premium add-on can provide additional functionality such as scheduled
automations. The WordPress.org edition remains fully functional on its own for manual
translation and bulk queue processing, provided WPML and an OpenAI API key are available.
