## Description

JPG and PNG files are often several times larger than the same image in WebP. RowanWeb
Media Converter & Cleaner converts new uploads as they arrive, on your own server,
and shows how much the images already in your library would save.

 * **WebP on upload.** When you turn it on, new JPG and PNG uploads are saved as
WebP right away, with every thumbnail size. The attachment ID stays the same,
so nothing that points to the image has to change.
 * **Nothing is lost.** The original file goes to the plugin’s trash and can be
restored with one click for 30 days.
 * **Measured on your images.** The WebP estimate converts a sample of your own
JPG and PNG files in a temporary file and reports the real saving. Nothing in
   the media library changes.
 * **No external service.** Conversion uses the image library of your server (GD
or Imagick). No account, no quota, no files sent anywhere.

#### Pro

Media Converter & Cleaner Pro adds two tools:

 * **Convert the images you already have.** One button converts every JPG and PNG
in the library to WebP, switches every link on the site to the new files (posts,
custom fields, options and page builder data), checks the live pages, and only
then moves the originals to the trash.
 * **Clean up the media library.** Finds images that no page and no database record
uses (it reads every page from your sitemap and searches posts, custom fields,
options and page builder data), checks each one again right before it moves,
and puts it in the same recoverable trash.

#### Limitations

 * Multisite network activation is not supported. Activate the plugin on each site
   separately.
 * The server must be able to write WebP. The WebP tab shows whether it can.

### External services

This plugin connects to the following third-party service. Nothing else is sent
anywhere by the free version.

#### Freemius (optional opt-in, licensing and updates of the Pro version)

The plugin includes the Freemius SDK, which handles licensing and updates of a separate
Pro version. In this free version, Freemius only shows an optional opt-in screen
after activation.

 * When: only if you choose to opt in (or activate a Pro license).
 * What is sent: your site URL, WordPress and PHP versions, plugin version, site
language, and the admin’s name and email address, plus plugin activation/deactivation/
uninstall events. If you skip the opt-in, nothing is sent.
 * Freemius [Terms of Service](https://freemius.com/terms/), [Privacy Policy](https://freemius.com/privacy/)
and [details on what is collected](https://freemius.com/wordpress/usage-tracking/).

The Pro cleanup and converter request your own site’s sitemap and pages over HTTP.
These requests stay on your site and are not a third-party service.

## Installation

 1. Upload the `rowanweb-media-cleaner` folder to `/wp-content/plugins/`, or install
the plugin from the Plugins screen.
 2. Activate it.
 3. Open **Media Converter & Cleaner** and turn on **Save new uploads as WebP**.

## FAQ

### Does it convert the images I already have?

The free version converts new uploads and shows how much the existing JPG and PNG
files would save. Converting the existing files is part of Pro.

### What happens to the original file?

It goes to `wp-content/uploads/_rwmc_trash/` and can be restored from the Trash
tab. After 30 days (you can change this in Settings) it is deleted for good.

### Which quality does it use?

82 by default, which looks the same as the original to most eyes. You can pick another
value on the WebP tab.

### Does it support multisite?

Not network-wide. You can activate it on individual sites.

## Changelog

#### 0.1.5

 * Pro: cleanup and conversion recognise references in Elementor and other page-
builder data — escaped URLs, file names with non-Latin letters, images used by
ID, product galleries in any post status and backgrounds in builder stylesheets.
Such images are no longer moved to the trash.
 * Pro: a failed check (database error, unreachable page or stylesheet, malformed
builder data) keeps the file instead of treating it as unused.
 * Pro: converting existing images updates URLs and image IDs inside page-builder
data and product galleries, and rebuilds Elementor styles afterwards.
 * Faster reference checks on sites with large page-builder data.
 * After an update with notable changes, one dismissible notice links to the release
notes (Plugins screen and the plugin page only).
 * No PHP 8.4 deprecation notices.

#### 0.1.4

 * Batch reference checks share database scans while preserving the live delete-
time gate and protecting files on database errors.
 * Page scan reports retain transport/HTTP failure reasons and show affected URLs.
 * Added an Open link on the Plugins screen and detailed progress during reference
   verification.
 * Improved the WebP layout, aligned settings and server panels, and clarified conversion
   counts.
 * Added a permanent selection toolbar, select-shown and select-all actions, and
   grid/list views for unused images.
 * Added trash search by file name or a URL from a 404 error, across all result
   pages.
 * Added loading indicators, placeholders and retry controls; show HTTP and invalid-
   response errors clearly.
 * Avoid loading large original images as candidate previews and count selected
   file sizes across pages.

#### 0.1.3

 * Nothing is written to the PHP error log unless WP_DEBUG is on; routine per-file
   entries also need `RWMC_DEBUG`.
 * The trash audit log keeps one name across salt changes, rotates at 1 MB and drops
   stale copies.

#### 0.1.2

 * Trash state is shown on the Trash tab only; no admin notice on the Plugins screen.
 * The daily cleanup no longer writes a log entry when nothing has expired.
 * An unreadable trash folder no longer stops the disk usage measurement.

#### 0.1.1

 * Added background trash disk usage, untracked-folder cleanup and scheduled-cleanup
   health information.
 * Preserve untracked files on uninstall and show trash storage on the Trash tab.
 * Added selective deletion of converted originals and storage planning before conversion.
 * Improved the WebP savings estimate for libraries with large originals.

#### 0.1.0

 * First version.
