This plugin puts the assistant on your site. Without it you would paste a script tag into your theme or into a snippet plugin; with it, you connect the site once and the widget is there. #### What this plugin does * Loads the Port8 chat widget on your site’s front end. * Lets Port8 record which assistant this site is linked to. * Reports the plugin’s own version and connection state so the Port8 dashboard can show whether it is installed. #### What this plugin does not do * It stores no passwords and no API keys. * It never sends anything to Port8 on its own — no page content, no orders, no visitor data. * It adds no scheduled tasks, no database tables, and no tracking. #### External service This plugin is the front end for [Port8](https://www.port8.ai), a hosted AI assistant service, and requires a Port8 account. Your visitors’ browsers load the chat widget script from `https://port8.ai`, and the chat itself runs against Port8’s servers. That means Port8 receives what a visitor types into the chat, in order to answer it. Separately — and only after you explicitly approve it in your own WordPress admin— Port8 reads your published content through WordPress’s REST API so the assistant can answer from it. That access is granted through WordPress’s own application- password screen and is revoked the same way, under Users Profile Application Passwords. Install and activate the plugin. 2. Click **Connect this site to Port8** in the prompt that appears, or go to **Settings Port8**. 3. Sign in to Port8 (or create an account) and choose which assistant this site should use. 4. Approve access when WordPress asks. The widget appears on your site straight away. If you started from the Port8 dashboard instead, it will have sent you here to install the plugin — return to that tab when you are done and it will pick the plugin up. ## FAQ ### How do I take the chat widget off my site? Turn it off in your Port8 dashboard, under the assistant’s widget settings — that is where the widget is configured, so that is where it is switched off. Deactivating this plugin also removes it. If your site uses a caching plugin the widget may linger on already-cached pages for a moment; the plugin clears the common caches for you. ### Does deleting the plugin disconnect my site from Port8? No, and this catches people out. Deleting the plugin removes the widget, but the access keys stored on Port8’s servers stay. To remove those, delete the knowledge source for this site in your Port8 dashboard. You can also revoke the access here, under **Users Profile Application Passwords** (and, for a store, under **WooCommerce Settings Advanced REST API**). ### Do I need WooCommerce? No. WooCommerce is optional — with it, the assistant can also answer questions about your products. ### Where do I change how the widget looks? In the Port8 dashboard.
