## Description

Platka Digital Backup and Migration backs up your whole WordPress site into a single
ZIP file and restores it again — on the same site or on a different one, straight
from a URL.

**Back up**

 * Choose exactly what goes in: Database, Plugins, Themes, Uploads, and Others (
WordPress core files, `wp-config.php` and anything else in `wp-content`).
 * Run a backup with one click from **Platka Digital Backup Dashboard**, or schedule
it to run daily, weekly or monthly.
 * Backups are built in short steps, so they keep working on shared hosting with
tight time and memory limits. Keep the tab open while a manual backup is running.
 * Old backups are removed automatically once you pass the number you chose to keep(
   5 by default).
 * Optional email when a scheduled backup completes, and when one fails.

**Restore and migrate**

 * Restore any backup you made on this site, picking which parts to restore.
 * Or paste the HTTPS link of a backup ZIP under **Restore from URL** to import
it onto this site — the way to move a site to a new host or domain.
 * A full safety backup of the current site is taken before anything is overwritten.
 * If the backup came from a different address, every URL in the database is rewritten
to match this site, and a different table prefix is handled for you.

**Built with safety in mind**

 * Backups are stored in `wp-content/platka-digital-backup/`, outside the uploads
folder, with an `.htaccess` rule that blocks direct downloads on Apache.
 * The dashboard checks whether that folder is reachable from the web and warns
you if it is. On Nginx, add the rule from the bundled `nginx-protection.conf.
   txt`.
 * Only administrators (users who can `manage_options`) can create, download, delete
   or restore backups.
 * An Activity Log records every backup and restore.

**Requirements**

PHP 7.4 or newer with the ZipArchive (zip) extension. The dashboard tells you if
something is missing.

## Installation

 1. Install through **Plugins Add New**, or upload the `platka-digital-backup-and-
    migration` folder to `/wp-content/plugins/`.
 2. Activate the plugin through the **Plugins** menu.
 3. Open **Platka Digital Backup** in the admin menu, choose what to include and click**
    Start Backup**.
 4. Optional: under **Settings Automatic Backups**, turn on a daily, weekly or monthly
    schedule.
 5. If your server runs Nginx, add the rule from `nginx-protection.conf.txt` (in the
plugin folder) to your site’s `server` block so backups can’t be downloaded directly.

## FAQ

### Where are my backups stored?

In `wp-content/platka-digital-backup/`, outside the uploads folder. The folder is
protected with an `.htaccess` file on Apache. On Nginx `.htaccess` has no effect,
so add the rule from `nginx-protection.conf.txt` (in the plugin folder) to your
server configuration.

### The dashboard says the backup folder is publicly accessible. What should I do?

Backups contain your `wp-config.php`, including database credentials and secret
keys, so fix this before you create more backups. Add the Nginx rule described above,
or ask your host to block direct access to `wp-content/platka-digital-backup/`.

### How do I move a site to a new host or domain?

Create a backup on the old site and put the ZIP somewhere reachable over HTTPS.
On the new site, install this plugin, open **Restore from URL**, paste the link,
choose what to restore and start. Every URL in the database is rewritten to the
new address automatically.

### Does restoring overwrite my current site?

Yes — the parts you select are replaced with the contents of the backup. A full
safety backup of the current site is taken first, so you can go back if something
goes wrong.

### Do I need to keep the browser tab open?

For manual backups and restores, yes: they run in small steps driven by the page,
and closing it stops the job. Scheduled backups run in the background through WP-
Cron, so nobody needs to be logged in.

### Does the plugin send my data to an external service?

No. Backups stay on your server. The only requests the plugin makes are to your
own site (to check that the backup folder isn’t publicly reachable) and to the HTTPS
address you enter when restoring from a URL.

### What happens to my backups if I deactivate or delete the plugin?

Deactivating stops scheduled backups but keeps everything else. Nothing is removed
automatically, even when you delete the plugin: your backups, settings and the plugin’s
database tables stay in place, so a backup is never lost by accident. Delete `wp-
content/platka-digital-backup/` yourself if you want it gone.
