Unlike a generic chatbot, Olotalk only answers from **your** content, your pages, docs, and product info, and shows **citations** for what it says. If the answer isn’t in your site, it says so instead of inventing one. You build and train the assistant in the [Olotalk dashboard](https://app.olotalk.com/)( crawl your site, review answers, tune the tone). This plugin does one small, reliable job: it drops the official Olotalk assistant onto every page of your WordPress site. [Create a free account](https://olotalk.com/) and build your assistant first, then install this plugin to put it live. ### External services This plugin relies on the Olotalk service to render and power the chat assistant. * **Assistant loader and bundle (`https://assistant.olotalk.com`).** The plugin adds a script tag pointing at `https://assistant.olotalk.com/loader/loader.iife. js`. That loader, running in the visitor’s browser, then fetches the assistant bundle and stylesheet from the same address. Both are served by Olotalk, so no third-party CDN is involved. * **Olotalk API (`https://api.olotalk.com`).** The assistant sends visitor questions to the Olotalk API and receives grounded answers. The specific data sent is the visitor’s message and the configured Assistant ID. * **Olotalk connect (only when you press the button).** Choosing **Connect to Olotalk** sends you to `https://app.olotalk.com/wordpress/connect` with this site’s address, a return address in your admin, and a one-time cryptographic challenge. Your site then makes one server-to-server request to `https://api.olotalk.com` to exchange the resulting one-time code for the Assistant ID, and Olotalk emails the account owner that the connection was made. No account token or API key is ever sent to or stored on this site. Nothing is contacted until you press the button, and pasting the Assistant ID by hand skips this entirely. By installing this plugin and configuring an Assistant ID you enable these connections. Install and activate the plugin (from **Plugins Add New**, search “Olotalk”, or upload the ZIP). 2. Go to **Settings Olotalk**. 3. Click **Connect to Olotalk**. Sign in, confirm the site and pick an assistant, the ID fills itself in. 4. Open your site. The chat launcher appears, in the bottom-right corner unless you moved it in the dashboard. One thing to know about **Install domains** in the dashboard: while that list is empty, your assistant answers on any site it is installed on. As soon as you add one domain, it answers only on the domains you listed, so add this site’s domain too if you start restricting. Prefer to do it by hand, or blocked by a security plugin? Paste your **Assistant ID** (it looks like `ast_oltk_…`) from your assistant’s **Install** step in the [Olotalk dashboard](https://app.olotalk.com/) and click **Save Assistant ID**. In the Olotalk dashboard, open your assistant and go to the **Install** step. The ID looks like `ast_oltk_…`. Use the **Connect to Olotalk** button on the settings screen: you sign in to Olotalk, pick an assistant, and the ID is filled in for you. Nothing to copy. Before it hands the assistant over, Olotalk shows you which site is asking and exactly what it will receive, the assistant’s ID and display name, nothing else. If that site’s domain isn’t already on your Olotalk account, you get a warning and have to confirm you recognise it. You also get an email once a connection completes, so one you didn’t intend can’t pass unnoticed. The manual ID field always stays available, it is the reliable path when a security plugin, SSO, or a managed host blocks the redirect. You can also hide the button entirely from **Settings Olotalk**. ### Do I need to finish the Olotalk setup wizard first? You need an assistant ID before the plugin can load anything. The setup wizard is the recommended path because it creates your assistant, crawls your site content, and shows the Install step. If your assistant was already created for you, you can install the plugin directly and paste that ID. ### I saved my Assistant ID but the chat isn’t showing up. Two common causes: 1. **Domain not allowed.** If you have set any **Install domains** in the dashboard, that list is exclusive, so add your site’s domain to it (and any `*.wpcomstaging. com` preview URL). The dashboard’s **Install** step shows an **Install status** card listing where your snippet was seen, including domains that need allowing, with a one-click fix. 2. **A caching plugin is delaying JavaScript.** If WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, or LiteSpeed has a “delay JavaScript execution” option, exclude `olotalk` from it, or the launcher won’t load until the visitor interacts with the page. The plugin loads the assistant in the site footer through WordPress’s script queue, so it works with any theme, block theme, or builder (Elementor, Divi, Bricks, etc.). ### Is it free? Olotalk has a free plan. Paid plans add more conversations, more indexed pages, and (on Growth) removal of the “Powered by Olotalk” badge.
