## Description

MeloTools AI Translation adds a **Translate page** button to the TranslatePress
visual editor. Pick a language, click once, and every untranslated string on the
page is translated by the AI provider you choose, then saved into TranslatePress
for you to review.

**Start free, no key needed.** The Free basic option uses the translator built into
Chrome and Edge on desktop. The text is translated on your computer and is not sent
to any AI service. Quality is basic, so review the result.

**Better quality with your own AI provider.** Connect Claude (Anthropic), ChatGPT(
OpenAI), Gemini (Google) or Groq with your own API key. You pay the provider directly
at their rates; there is no extra subscription or middleman.

#### What it does

 * One-click translation of a whole page in the TranslatePress visual editor.
 * Translates only untranslated strings by default. Strings you translated or edited
   yourself are never overwritten.
 * Optional “redo” for a page: replace earlier machine translations, and, as a separate
   confirmed choice, your own edits too.
 * Undo the last run, or clear the machine translations on a page. Your own edits
   are always kept.
 * Shows the size of each run before large jobs, and warns when a translation looks
   like the wrong script or the wrong Chinese variant (Traditional or Simplified).
 * Every result is checked against the original before it is saved: HTML tags, links,
   placeholders and shortcodes must be unchanged, or the result is rejected.
 * Optional tone and glossary settings, so brand names and key terms are translated
   consistently.
 * Simple dashboard with step-by-step setup for each provider and a Test connection
   button.
 * Translation statistics: strings and characters translated, and the last run.

#### Built for safety

 * Administrators only, with a nonce check on every request.
 * API keys are private to the user who saved them and stored encrypted.
 * Provider addresses are fixed in the code, so the plugin cannot be pointed at
   other servers.
 * Nothing is loaded for visitors, no cron jobs and no tracking.

#### Requirements

 * [TranslatePress](https://wordpress.org/plugins/translatepress-multilingual/)
   installed and set up with at least one extra language.
 * For Free basic: Chrome or Edge on desktop with the built-in translator available.
 * For AI providers: your own API key from the provider.

### External services

This plugin sends text to the AI provider you choose, only when an administrator
clicks Translate page or Test connection. What is sent: the untranslated text strings
of the page, the language names, and the optional tone and glossary text from the
settings. No visitor data is sent. Nothing is sent when you use Free basic.

Check each provider’s current terms. Free tiers can use prompts to improve the provider’s
products.

## FAQ

### Is it free?

Yes. The plugin is free, and Free basic needs no key and costs nothing. AI providers
charge you directly for what you use. Gemini and Groq offer free tiers with limits.
Set a spending limit with your provider.

### I see “HTTP 429” or “Rate limit reached”. What now?

Your provider’s free tier has a limit per minute and per day, set by the provider,
not by this plugin. Wait and click Translate page again: strings that were already
translated are kept, so it continues where it stopped. For larger sites, enable
billing with your provider or choose another model under Model (optional).

### Will it overwrite translations I edited myself?

No. By default only untranslated strings are translated. Your own edits are only
replaced if you explicitly choose that option for a page.

### Can I undo a run?

Yes. In the TranslatePress editor, click Undo last run to restore the strings as
they were before your last run or clear. Strings you edited by hand after that run
are left as they are. One level of undo is kept for each user.

### What does Clear machine translations do?

It removes the machine translations of the strings on the current page so you can
translate them again. Strings you translated or edited yourself are kept, and you
can undo the clear.

### The translation is in the wrong script or Chinese variant. What now?

The plugin warns when a result looks like the wrong script (for example Latin instead
of Cyrillic) or the wrong Chinese variant. Use Undo last run, choose another model
or provider, and translate again. The warning never blocks saving.

### Where are my API keys stored?

Keys belong to the user who saved them. Other administrators cannot see or use them;
each person adds their own. They are encrypted in the user profile data with libsodium,
using your site secret keys and the user ID, and are never sent to the browser.
Only a four character hint is shown.

For stronger protection, define the key in wp-config.php instead (it then applies
to every administrator on the site):

    ```
    define( 'OCAT_GEMINI_KEY', '...' ); (also `OCAT_ANTHROPIC_KEY`, `OCAT_OPENAI_KEY`, `OCAT_GROQ_KEY`)
    ```

If you change your site secret keys (AUTH_KEY, AUTH_SALT), saved keys must be entered
again.

### What is sent to the AI provider?

Only when an administrator clicks Translate page or Test connection: the untranslated
text strings of the page, the language names, and the optional tone and glossary
text. No visitor data is sent. See External services below.

### Does Free basic work in every browser?

Free basic uses the translator built into Chrome and Edge on desktop. The browser
may download a language pack the first time you use a language pair. Other browsers
can use an AI provider instead.

### Can I test with a local model such as Ollama or LM Studio?

Yes, on local test sites only. Add to wp-config.php:

    ```
    define( 'OCAT_ALLOW_LOCAL_LLM', true );
    define( 'OCAT_LOCAL_LLM_URL', 'http://127.0.0.1:11434/v1' ); (LM Studio: `http://127.0.0.1:1234/v1`)
    ```

A “Local AI” tile then appears. If WordPress runs in Docker, use `http://host.docker.
internal:11434/v1` and start Ollama with `OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0:11434`. Never enable
this on a public site.

### Who can use it?

Users with the manage_options capability (administrators). Developers can change
this with the `ocat_capability` filter.

## Changelog

#### 1.0.1

 * New: “Refresh preview” link in the editor clears the page cache (LiteSpeed Cache)
   and reloads the editor, so saved translations show at once.
 * Fix: some strings (often post titles, meta descriptions and paragraphs) could
   be saved untranslated when the AI returned the source text, and later runs then
   skipped them. Unchanged answers for real sentences are now retried, and never
   saved as a translation. To repair a page from an earlier version, tick “Redo
   from scratch” once.
 * Fix: on sites with a page cache (for example LiteSpeed Cache) the editor preview
   could show the old text after a run. The plugin now purges LiteSpeed Cache after
   saving, undoing or clearing, and reloads the editor with a fresh copy.
 * Fix: strings containing “&” (common in meta titles) were skipped when the translation
   dropped the “&”, for example in Chinese.
 * Fix: strings listed in the editor were missed when TranslatePress shows its string
   groups in another language (for example “Lista de cadenas”). Meta information
   strings are now included too.

#### 1.0.0

 * First public release on WordPress.org, renamed from “Automate AI Translation
   for TranslatePress”.
 * New: Undo last run (one level per user). Strings edited after the run are never
   touched.
 * New: Clear machine translations on a page, keeping your own edits. Undoable.
 * New: Run size shown before large runs, and a warning for the wrong script or
   Chinese variant.
 * Fix: translations from the editor were not saved since 0.6.4 (“redoMode is not
   defined”).
 * If a provider is briefly busy (HTTP 500 to 504), the request is retried once
   automatically, with a clearer message if it still fails.
 * Gemini now defaults to gemini-flash-lite-latest, which follows Google’s current
   Flash-Lite model and has a larger free allowance.
 * Security: every request input is sanitised where it is read; database queries
   use prepared identifiers.
 * Settings screen: support and contact links.
 * Tested with WordPress 7.1.

#### 0.6.4

 * New “Redo from scratch” option in the editor: replaces earlier machine translations
   for this page only. An extra, separately confirmed option also replaces your
   own edits.

#### 0.6.3

 * Groq default model is now openai/gpt-oss-20b (Llama models are not on every free
   account); Groq runs one batch at a time.

#### 0.6.2

 * Settings: after Save, the page reloads so Test connection is always available;
   errors show the provider code.

#### 0.6.1

 * Clearer error: a 404 now shows the model ID that was tried.

#### 0.6.0

 * New: Free basic translation with no API key, using the browser built-in translator(
   Chrome or Edge, desktop).

#### 0.5.1

 * Fix: translations rejected when the AI returned a plain apostrophe or space instead
   of an HTML code.
 * Security: quotes encoded in saved text, URLs and emails must be unchanged, structure
   check fails closed.

#### 0.5.0

 * API keys are now private to each user account.
