This plugin hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.

Exhibit to WP Gallery

Exhibit to WP Gallery can convert your ancient Exhibit 1.1b entries to normal WordPress attachments. It assumes a linux host.

  • Captions and image order will be transferred.
  • All files will be copied to your upload folder. (use Custom Upload Dir for better structure!)
  • New thumbnails will be generated according to your WordPress settings
  • Lastly, the plugin will add ‘<br /> [gallery]‘ to the end of each post it touches.
  • The plugin can list all posts currently using Exhibit, making it easy to visit them and make sure all went OK.

The conversion is slow and painfull; the script might timeout. Therefore it is built so you can do it in chunks. Tip: Start with a single post and a few rows to make sure everything works before running through the entire table.

Backup both the filesystem and database before running the conversion!

  1. Make sure you’re hosted on a linux server. (requires file)
  2. Extract exhibit-to-wp-gallery.php and transfer it to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory
  3. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  4. Visit “Exhibit to WP Gallery” in “Settings” and follow the instructions.

I recommend you read the source code of the plugin before running it. It has only been tested on one blog, and might make assumptions that doesn’t hold true for your installation.

What’s ‘’ for?

You need to have Exhibit running for the conversion to work. The original Exhibit wont run on WordPress 2.1 or newer though, so I included a patched version of Exhibit 1.1b, enabled to run on WordPress up to 2.6.3. (use your original configuration files, or remember to edit the included ones)

Why *attachments* and not [insert your favorite gallery plugin]

Exhibit was the only proper solution back in those days – way before WordPress even had file uploading capabilities. With only small modifications it has kept on working over ten major wordpress releases!

But all plugins are bound to become outdated. The only sane long term solution is to use the core WP functions. Get yourself a plugin that is built on top of those, and you’ll always have a safe fallback.
