LezWatchTV News and Information

Description

LezWatchTV catalogs and documents queer female, transgender, and non-binary characters, as well as their actors and shows from TV, web and streaming media. With that data, statistics are calculated on the state of international queer story representation. We provide easy and free access to finding the best shows with queer characters and stories in the genres fans want to see. We can help you keep up to date with the global happenings of queer representation on television.

Currently we provide the following information about those characters:

  • … of the Day: A character or show (or death of a character) of the current day
  • Last Death: The latest character death
  • On This Day: The names of characters who died on that day
  • Statistics: The percentage of characters who died and/or shows with death
  • This Year: An overview of data from a specific year

Why only female queers?

Because the site data is from LezWatchTV and that’s what we specialize in. If someone wants to make a similar site for male queers, we’re happy to help them output their data so it can be used too.

Why was this plugin originally called “Bury Your Queers”?

Bury Your Queers is also known as “Dead Lesbian Syndrome” or “Bury Your Gays”. It basically means a disproportionate number of queers on TV die.

In the early days of queers on TV, characters were not allowed to have happy endings. If they were lucky enough to end up in a relationship it was abusive, perverse, or one had to die at the end. This also happened, in large numbers, to queers who weren’t in relationships, making being a queer character on TV in the US more deadly than being on the Titanic.

These days, there’s a thinly veiled ‘justification’ that ‘everyone dies.’ They try to make it look like the queer characters are a noble sacrifice, so they can claim they didn’t kill off character as a ‘punishment’ for being gay, but instead that they were too worthy for this earth.

The problem is that since around 1961, queer people have been seeing their television representations be disposable. And many of us strongly feel that this constant reflection in the media has a detrimental impact on our self-worth.

In short? It’s harmful.
