## Description

**Let your customers pay straight from their bank account. No card needed, and no
bank transfers to match by hand.**

**Bank Payments via Nello Pay for WooCommerce** adds a **Pay by Bank** payment method
to your WooCommerce checkout. It connects your store to [Nello Pay](https://www.neonomics.io/nello-pay),
the open banking payment service of Neonomics, so shoppers in **Norway, Sweden,
Denmark and Finland** can pay for an order directly from their own bank account.

After placing the order the customer is taken to the secure Nello Pay checkout,
chooses their bank, signs in with the bank’s own login and approves the payment.
The money is sent from their account to yours as an account-to-account bank payment,
and the WooCommerce order is updated for you.

This is not a manual “direct bank transfer” method where you wait for money to arrive
and then look for the matching order. Nello Pay for WooCommerce follows every bank
payment from checkout until Nello Pay confirms that the funds were received.

#### Why offer Pay by Bank in your WooCommerce store?

 * **One more way to pay at checkout** — bank payments next to your cards, wallets
   and invoices.
 * **No card needed** — customers approve the payment at their own bank, with the
   login they already use.
 * **Less manual work** — orders move to On hold, Processing or Failed by themselves
   as the bank payment progresses.
 * **Paid means paid** — an order is marked paid when Nello Pay confirms the funds,
never because a browser page says so.
 * **No silent surprises** — when a bank stops reporting on a payment, or an amount
does not add up, you get an alert and an email instead of a wrong order status.
 * **Private by design** — no customer name, email address or postal address is
sent to Nello Pay, and your store never sees bank login details.
 * **Free and complete** — no license key, no paid add-on, no trial period and no
   usage limits.

#### How Pay by Bank works for your customers

 1. At checkout the customer selects **Pay by Bank** and places the order.
 2. They are taken to the Nello Pay checkout, choose their bank, sign in and approve
    the payment.
 3. They return to the order confirmation page of your store, which shows the payment
    status and updates by itself.

If a customer cancels, or the bank declines the payment, no money is taken and they
can pay for the same order again.

#### What happens to the order in WooCommerce

 * **Payment approved** — the order is placed **On hold** while the bank transfers
   the money.
 * **Payment confirmed** — the order is marked paid (**Processing** or **Completed**,
exactly as WooCommerce normally decides) when Nello Pay confirms that the funds
   were received.
 * **Payment failed or cancelled** — the customer can pay for the same order again.
 * **Bank stopped reporting** — the order stays On hold and you are asked to check
your bank account and confirm or reject the payment on the order.

#### Features

 * **WooCommerce Pay by Bank gateway** for Norway (NOK), Sweden (SEK), Denmark (
   DKK) and Finland (EUR).
 * **Checkout Block and Classic Checkout**, plus the pay-for-order page, for guests
   and logged-in customers.
 * **Automatic order status updates** from the authenticated payment status webhook
   of Nello Pay.
 * **Live payment status** on the order confirmation page, without reloading.
 * **Protection against double payments** caused by double clicks, page reloads
   or several open tabs.
 * **Careful handling of unusual cases** — for example, money that arrives for an
order you already cancelled is held for your review instead of being processed
   automatically.
 * **A clear order panel** with the payment status, the Nello Pay identifiers, key
   dates and earlier payment attempts.
 * **A Pay by Bank column in the orders list**, so payments that need your attention
   are easy to spot.
 * **Alerts and emails** for payments that need a decision.
 * **Test mode** with the Nello Pay Sandbox: run complete test orders without moving
   real money.
 * **Guided setup** with a status checklist, a one-click connection test, a webhook
key generator, the Nello Pay Health page and WordPress Site Health checks.
 * **Your own wording** for the payment method title, the checkout description and
the payment message on the bank statement.
 * **High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS)** compatible.
 * **Translation ready**, with a Russian translation included.
 * **Developer friendly** — action hooks, filters and WP-CLI commands.

#### Supported countries and currencies

 * Norway — Norwegian krone (NOK)
 * Sweden — Swedish krona (SEK)
 * Denmark — Danish krone (DKK)
 * Finland — euro (EUR)

A store uses one market. Pay by Bank is offered when the order is in the currency
of that market and is hidden automatically otherwise.

#### Good to know

Nello Pay for WooCommerce is built for **one-time bank payments in the local currency
of one Nordic market per store**. It does not process cards, subscriptions or saved
payment methods. Nello Pay has no refund function, so a refund is a bank transfer
you make yourself and record in WooCommerce as a manual refund. Pay by Bank works
alongside your other WooCommerce payment methods.

#### What you need

 * WordPress 6.6 or later and [WooCommerce](https://wordpress.org/plugins/woocommerce/)
   8.7 or later.
 * PHP 8.1 or later.
 * A store that sells in NOK, SEK, DKK or EUR.
 * A [Nello Pay Merchant Portal account](https://merchant.neonomics.io/login) with
a receiving bank account in that market.
 * A site that is publicly reachable over HTTPS, so Nello Pay can report payment
   statuses to it.

#### Documentation and support

 * Step-by-step setup: the **Installation** tab of this page.
 * Questions and help: the [support forum](https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/buckmerce-nellopay/).

### External services

Bank Payments via Nello Pay for WooCommerce relies on [Nello Pay](https://www.neonomics.io/nello-pay),
a payment service of Neonomics AS, to create and track Pay by Bank payments. It
cannot take payments without it.

 * **Nello Pay Checkout API** (`https://checkout.sandbox.neonomics.io` in test mode,`
https://checkout.neonomics.io` for live payments) — contacted by your server
when a customer starts a Pay by Bank payment and when you click **Test connection**.
It receives your Nello Pay API key and the payment details listed below.
 * **Nello Pay hosted checkout** — the customer’s browser is redirected there to
choose a bank and approve the payment.
 * **Nello Pay webhook** — Nello Pay notifies your site when the status of a payment
   changes.

Information sent to Nello Pay when a payment starts: the order amount and currency,
the market and language, a payment message with the order number, your store name,
internal order and payment references and the addresses of your order pages the
customer returns to. The customer’s name, email address and postal address are not
sent. Bank login details are entered directly at Nello Pay and the bank and are
never sent to your store. Nothing is sent before a customer chooses Pay by Bank
or you test the connection.

This service is provided by Neonomics AS: [terms and legal documentation](https://www.neonomics.io/legal),
[end-user terms and conditions](https://www.neonomics.io/legal/end-user-terms-and-conditions),
[privacy policy](https://www.neonomics.io/legal/privacy-notice).

### Privacy

Nello Pay for WooCommerce does not track you or your customers and sends no usage
data to its author. Nello Pay payment references and statuses are stored with your
orders and in the plugin’s own records, so that payments can be followed and audited.
The payer’s name and account number reported by Nello Pay are not stored. Suggested
text for your privacy policy is added under **Settings Privacy**.

When you delete the plugin, its settings and history are removed only if you turned
on **Uninstall cleanup**. The payment details saved on your orders always stay.

### Security

 * Your Nello Pay API key and webhook key stay on your server. They are never shown
again in the settings, never sent to the browser and are removed from logs.
 * The amount and currency always come from the WooCommerce order, so they cannot
be changed in the customer’s browser.
 * Coming back from Nello Pay never marks an order paid; only a notification that
carries your webhook key can change an order.
 * Payment actions in the admin are limited to users who are allowed to manage WooCommerce.

### Source code

The JavaScript and CSS shipped with the plugin are built from readable TypeScript
and SCSS source code. The full source and the build tools are public on GitHub:
[github.com/Buckmerce/NelloPay](https://github.com/Buckmerce/NelloPay). To build
them yourself, run `npm ci` and `npm run build` in a copy of the repository. No
third-party library is bundled.

## Installation

Setting up takes about ten minutes. Start in test mode (Sandbox): no real money
moves until you switch to Production.

#### Before you start

 * WooCommerce is installed and active.
 * Your store currency (**WooCommerce Settings General Currency**) is NOK, SEK,
   DKK or EUR.
 * Your site is reachable from the internet over HTTPS. A site on your own computer
needs a public HTTPS tunnel to receive payment confirmations.

#### Step 1. Install and activate

From your WordPress admin:

 1. Open **Plugins Add New Plugin** and search for **Nello Pay**.
 2. Click **Install Now** next to **Buckmerce – Bank Payments via Nello Pay for WooCommerce**,
    then **Activate**.

Or upload the ZIP file:

 1. Download the plugin ZIP from WordPress.org.
 2. Open **Plugins Add New Plugin Upload Plugin**, choose the file, click **Install
    Now** and then **Activate Plugin**.

After activation open **WooCommerce Settings Payments** and click **Nello Pay**.
At the top of the settings you see a status checklist that tells you what is still
missing.

#### Step 2. Get your Nello Pay API key

 1. Sign up or sign in at the [Nello Pay Merchant Portal](https://merchant.neonomics.io/login).
 2. Stay in the **Sandbox** view of the portal while you test.
 3. Make sure a **receiving account** exists for the country you sell in. This is the
bank account your payments are sent to.
 4. Open **Company settings Integration** and copy the **API key**.

Sandbox and Production have separate API keys. You get Production access after you
complete the onboarding with Neonomics (see “Step 7. Go live”).

#### Step 3. Connect your store

In **WooCommerce Settings Payments Nello Pay**:

 1. **Environment** — leave it on **Sandbox (test, no real money)**.
 2. **API key** — paste the key from Step 2. The key is stored on your server and is
    never displayed again.
 3. **Market** — choose Norway (NOK), Sweden (SEK), Denmark (DKK) or Finland (EUR).
It must match your store currency.
 4. Click **Save changes**.

#### Step 4. Set up the webhook

Nello Pay confirms every payment by calling a webhook on your site. Without it no
order can be marked paid, so Pay by Bank is not offered at checkout until a webhook
key is set.

 1. In the Nello Pay settings, next to **Webhook key**, click **Generate a key**. Click**
Copy** to copy the new key, then **Save changes**.
 2. Copy the **Webhook URL** shown on the same screen.
 3. In the Merchant Portal open **Company settings Webhook**.
 4. Paste the webhook URL. Enter it without `https://`, exactly as it is shown in the
    Nello Pay settings.
 5. Paste the same webhook key into the key field of the portal and save.

The key in the portal and the key in your store must be identical. You can also
choose your own key: 16 to 128 characters without spaces.

#### Step 5. Test the connection

 1. Back in the Nello Pay settings click **Test connection**. You should see **Connected
    to Nello Pay**.
 2. Read the status checklist at the top of the page. No row should say **FAIL**; a
row that does explains what to change.

#### Step 6. Turn Pay by Bank on and place a test order

 1. Tick **Offer Pay by Bank at checkout** and click **Save changes**. The status at
    the top changes to **Ready**.
 2. Open your shop, add a product to the cart and choose **Pay by Bank** at checkout.
 3. On the Nello Pay checkout choose a test bank and sign in with the [Sandbox test credentials published by Neonomics](https://docs.neonomics.io/docs/sandbox-testing).
 4. Approve the payment. You return to the order confirmation page, and the order becomes**
Processing** (or **Completed**) as soon as Nello Pay confirms the payment.

In Sandbox the order total decides how a test payment ends:

 * **20** — the payment fails.
 * **30** — the payment is cancelled.
 * **40** — the bank stops reporting on the payment, and you confirm or reject it
   on the order.
 * **Any other amount** — the payment completes.

After your first test payment the checklist row **Webhook updates received from
Nello Pay** turns to **PASS**. This is the proof that your webhook works.

#### Step 7. Go live

 1. Complete the onboarding with Neonomics (customer due diligence and contract) to
get Production access to the Merchant Portal.
 2. In the **Production** view of the portal check your receiving account, copy the
Production **API key** and register the webhook again with a **new** webhook key.
 3. In the Nello Pay settings set **Environment** to **Production (real money)**, enter
the Production API key and the new webhook key, and click **Save changes**.
 4. Click **Test connection** and make sure the status says **Ready**.
 5. Make one real payment of a small amount and follow it until the order is paid.

Production requires HTTPS. For dependable payment updates on a store with few visitors,
ask your host to run WP-Cron from a server cron job.

#### Optional settings

 * **Title** and **Description** — the name and text of the payment method at checkout.
The default title is “Pay by Bank”.
 * **Store name in Nello Pay** — the name your customers see while they pay. Leave
it empty to use your site title.
 * **Payment message** — the message attached to the bank payment. `{order_number}`
is replaced by the order number.
 * **Debug logging** — writes detailed logs to **WooCommerce Status Logs**. Keys
and other sensitive values are removed from the logs.
 * **Uninstall cleanup** — also removes the Nello Pay settings and history when
you delete the plugin. Payment records on your orders are always kept.

#### If something does not work

 * **Pay by Bank is not shown at checkout** — open the Nello Pay settings and read
the status checklist. The usual reasons are a missing API key or webhook key,
no market selected, or a store currency that differs from the currency of the
   market.
 * **Orders are not marked paid** — the webhook is not reaching your site. Compare
the webhook URL and key in the Merchant Portal with the values in your store,
and make sure you are in the right portal view (Sandbox or Production).
 * **Need more detail?** — open **WooCommerce Nello Pay Health** for a full report
that is safe to share with support.

## FAQ

### What is Pay by Bank?

Pay by Bank lets a customer pay for an order directly from a bank account instead
of a card. The customer approves a one-time payment at their own bank, and WooCommerce
is updated automatically as the payment progresses. It is also known as an open
banking payment or an account-to-account payment.

### Do I need a Nello Pay account?

Yes. Payments are processed by Nello Pay, a service of Neonomics AS, so you need
your own [Merchant Portal account](https://merchant.neonomics.io/login). You can
start in the Sandbox and apply for Production access when you are ready.

### Is it free? What does it cost?

Nello Pay for WooCommerce is free. There is no license key, no paid add-on, no trial
period and no usage limit, and it adds no fees of its own. Neonomics charges for
Nello Pay according to your agreement with them.

### Which countries and currencies are supported?

Norway (NOK), Sweden (SEK), Denmark (DKK) and Finland (EUR), with the banks Nello
Pay supports in each country. A store uses one market; Pay by Bank is hidden automatically
when the store or order currency is not the currency of that market.

### What does the customer see?

The customer selects **Pay by Bank** in WooCommerce and is taken to the Nello Pay
checkout, where they choose their bank, sign in and approve the payment. Then they
return to the order confirmation page of your store, which shows the current payment
status.

### In which language is the Nello Pay checkout shown?

In the language your store is shown in when that is Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or
Finnish, and in English otherwise.

### How long does a bank payment take?

In many cases seconds; depending on the banks involved it can take up to a couple
of business days. Until Nello Pay confirms the funds, the order stays On hold.

### When is the WooCommerce order marked paid?

When Nello Pay reports that the funds were received. The customer’s approval alone
puts the order On hold; it does not mark it paid.

### Why is Pay by Bank not shown at my checkout?

Pay by Bank is offered when it is enabled, an API key, a market and a webhook key
are saved, and the order currency is the currency of the selected market. In Production
your site must also use HTTPS. The status checklist at the top of **WooCommerce
Settings Payments Nello Pay** names the check that fails and tells you how to
fix it.

### The customer paid, but the order is not marked paid. What should I check?

First open the order and look at the **Nello Pay** panel. If the payment is approved,
the bank may still be transferring the money, which can take up to a couple of business
days. If no payment status arrives at all, Nello Pay cannot reach your webhook:
compare the webhook URL and key in the Merchant Portal with the values in your store,
check that you use the right portal view (Sandbox or Production), and make sure
no firewall or security plugin blocks requests to `/wp-json/buckmerce-nellopay/v1/
webhook`.

### What does “the bank stopped reporting” mean?

Sometimes a bank accepts a payment but stops telling Nello Pay what happened to
it. The order then stays On hold and you get an alert. Check your bank account:
if the money arrived, click **Funds received: mark as paid** on the order; if it
did not, click **Funds not received** and the customer can pay again.

### Can I test without real money?

Yes. In the Sandbox environment no real money moves. Use the [test bank credentials published by Neonomics](https://docs.neonomics.io/docs/sandbox-testing).
An order total of 20 fails, 30 is cancelled, 40 ends as a payment the bank stopped
reporting on, and any other amount completes.

### Can I test on a local site?

The settings and the checkout work on a local site, but Nello Pay can confirm a
payment only when it reaches your site over public HTTPS. Use a staging site or
a public HTTPS tunnel for test payments.

### Why does my site have to be reachable over HTTPS?

Nello Pay reports every payment status to your site through a webhook, and it delivers
webhooks to public HTTPS addresses only. Without the webhook no order can be marked
paid, so Pay by Bank is not offered until a webhook key is set.

### Does my store receive bank usernames, passwords or account numbers?

No. Bank sign-in and payment approval happen at Nello Pay and the customer’s bank.
Your store keeps only the Nello Pay payment references and statuses needed to manage
the WooCommerce order.

### Which customer data is sent to Nello Pay?

None that identifies a person. Nello Pay receives the order amount and currency,
the market and language, a payment message with the order number, your store name,
internal references and the addresses of your order pages. The customer’s name,
email address and postal address are not sent.

### Can I issue refunds from WooCommerce?

Nello Pay has no refund function. Send the money back by bank transfer and record
it in WooCommerce with **Refund manually**.

### Can a customer try again after a failed payment?

Yes. If the payment failed, was cancelled or was not finished, the customer can
pay for the same order again.

### Can a customer pay twice for the same order?

Nello Pay for WooCommerce is built to prevent it. Double clicks, page reloads and
several open tabs lead to the same Nello Pay checkout, and if a second payment for
an order still arrives, it is reported to you instead of being hidden.

### Does it accept credit or debit cards?

No. Nello Pay for WooCommerce is focused on bank payments. You can keep your card
gateway next to it.

### Can I use it together with other payment gateways?

Yes. Pay by Bank is a regular WooCommerce payment method and appears next to the
other payment methods you have enabled.

### Does it support Checkout Blocks, HPOS and guest checkout?

Yes. It works with the Checkout Block and Classic Checkout, is compatible with High-
Performance Order Storage (HPOS), and can be used by guests as well as logged-in
customers.

### Does it support subscriptions or saved payment methods?

No. Only one-time Pay by Bank payments are supported.

### Does it work with multi-currency stores?

Pay by Bank is offered for orders in the currency of the selected market and is
hidden for orders in any other currency.

### Can I change the name of the payment method at checkout?

Yes. Change **Title** and **Description** in the Nello Pay settings. You can also
set the store name shown in the Nello Pay checkout and the payment message on the
bank statement.

### What happens if I turn Pay by Bank off?

Disabling the payment method only hides Pay by Bank at checkout. Payments that already
started keep being processed. Keep the plugin itself active while payments are still
open.

### Does it need WP-Cron?

Payment statuses are applied the moment Nello Pay reports them. A background job(
WooCommerce Action Scheduler) finishes anything that was interrupted and watches
for payments that need your attention. On a store with few visitors, run WP-Cron
from a server cron job so that this job runs on time.

### Is it translation ready?

Yes. All texts shown to customers and store managers can be translated, and a Russian
translation is included.

### Can developers extend it?

Yes. Nello Pay for WooCommerce fires WordPress action hooks when a payment is confirmed,
fails, is cancelled or needs review, offers filters for optional checkout fields
and alert recipients, and includes WP-CLI commands. See the [developer documentation on GitHub](https://github.com/Buckmerce/NelloPay#readme).

### Where do I troubleshoot a payment?

Open the order to see the **Nello Pay** panel with the payment status and history.
For the store as a whole, use **WooCommerce Nello Pay Health**, Site Health, or
the WooCommerce logs with source `buckmerce-nellopay`. Sensitive details are removed
from the logs.

### Where can I get help?

Ask in the [plugin support forum](https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/buckmerce-nellopay/).
The Nello Pay Health page is safe to share: it contains no credentials and no customer
data.
