WordPress Announcement List: Emails - Fix It? or Use it?

Referring to this post in the forums, http://wordpress.org/support/topic/118485?replies=3#post-561297

The Moderator suggested I post in here.

Is the WordPress Announcement List working? Is it used?

There is a signup box on every page of the Support Forums.

This seems like a very important resource. And, if it is offered, shouldn't it be used?

My recent response from a Moderator in the forums is that it does not work - and never has. Is this true?

If it doesn't work, the best idea I have is to fix it.

If it does work, how about posting a FAQ that explains when and why it is used.

Finally, provide a process through which users may manage their subscription to the list.

  2. This list is critically important to users who want to keep WordPress up to date. I, for one, never see my dashboard so I rarely see the WordPress development blogs. Let's get this sorted out guys.

As maintainers of WordPress sites for our customers, an announce list really is essential to our operations. We don't have the resources to constantly check an RSS feed. One more list shouldn't take much effort, and it would add so much to the WP project.

Alternatively, if the list isn't going to be implemented, the signup boxes which feature on most pages of the site should be removed. But really, we'd much prefer to see an announce list in place. :)

WP ~~really~~ needs a working announcement list for Security issues and program updates.

I cannot Blog every day, but want to install Security updates the moment they are released.

Without a working announcement list, I have to check the WP website every day, which is foolish.

How hard can an email list be?
