Variable custom header images

In Twenty Ten 1.1 Theme > Appearance > Header > Custom header settings > Default images list
    (wp-admin/themes.php?page=custom-header):

The function outputs these thumbnails according to a hard-coded list of image paths recorded in functions.php. This is quite restrictive to users who want to change the available images. They either have to call their replacement images by the same name (and "cherry-blossom" is a bit specific) or they have to amend the functions.php file.

Could the function just look for all jpegs in that folder?

Alternatively, you could give the default images more generic names such as "banner1", "banner2", etc.

You could probably achieve something similar instead why a plugin such as the Easing Slider. It allows you to upload your own images and display them in a slider. Then just set the transition to fade, disable pagination & shadow then just make the transition time rather long. Would look perfect.

There's already a button there for the WP admin interface user to upload their own image. Also adding a featured image to a page (was called post thumbnail in WP2.9) will override the site-wide image.

I've loaded and saved a series of photos for the Easing Slider plugin, plus the other steps mentioned in this blog. How do I now make this replace the custom or default headers in the twentyten theme? The site I'm modifying is corbanclinic.org. Thanks.
