Use the smarty template technology

I use a content management system that uses the smarty template/template lite technology. It's much faster than the wordpress approach and it supports caching in the technology. I think it's time to re-examine the template approach and improve wordpress performance.

PHP /is/ a templating language. Smarty is recreating the wheel using the same wheel that's already accomplished the task.

I totally agree, have said it before myself.

How exactly is adding an additional level of templating going to make it faster, if anything i'd expect it to be slower, unless you're suggesting replacing the whole WP templating system for a Smarty equivalent, in which case i'm still not in favour.

I don't really want to learn another syntax, HTML, CSS and PHP can do anything i want, why would i need to add Smarty to that list? What can it offer those three can't already?

If you can provide reasonable answers to those questions i'll be happy to listen, until then i have to say i'm not for this idea.

I do love Smarty and have used in in a number of custom web projects, but I don't think WordPress would benefit much from switching to Smarty. Would be cool as a plugin; but for the majority, the current theming system works well.

This has been brought up before, and the response is pretty much what these commenters have said. For now, at least, we're sticking with our templating system, though additions are being made to make it faster and more flexible.
