Track incoming links and pingbacks to homepages

Potentially a good idea but may slow a busy site down to a crawl if it can't be disabled

  2. I like this idea in general as I discussed it with a couple of friends last week. However, site speed might go down for site with poor hosting. Also, this might trigger some abuse cases.

  3. It would be a great idea but many sites couldn't use.

It will be independently feature? I think that it's better to do in with import backlinks from google webmaster's tool.

  5. I think it's a good idea.

The concept of pingbacks is accepted and implemented, but only for posts. Obviously ping backs can be and are abused.

So getting pingbacks to the homepage won't make it worse but helps bloggers to know, if somebody is writing about them.

Relying on external solutions like Google Analytics is not for everyone, because not everyone likes or is able to use advanced software and services.

  6. I want to add to Michael's point that for some users, there might be privacy and security issues involved, using external services like Google Analytics.

Something that has changed in recent years is the rise of negative SEO and the ability to induce link penalties. This wasn't always true before. In this case, I think it is even more important than before to know as soon as possible when your homepage is linked by another site. If it is a bad domain, you would want to disavow it immediately, not after several months when you notice that your traffic is mysteriously dying and Google finally deigns to show you the link (not guaranteed!) in webmaster tools.

That would be something you'd want to handle via a tool like Google Webmaster Tools, and less so WordPress.
