I have used Smarty for a plugin for a client. Lots of advantages!
This isn't on the roadmap. If you find editing the actual theme files too complicated (and given that I've seen junior high students do it, I have to wonder if you just don't want to bother), you could try somthing like the Elastic theme generator plugin. http://elastictheme.org
