Select Image Sizes on Upload

It would be great to be able to select which sizes you want images resized to when uploading.

A lot of my sites use a lot of different image sizes, but I don't need all the images I upload to be resized to all of them, for example banner images will never be used as thumbnails etc.

Currently I have about a million versions* of each image I upload which wastes a load of space.

*possibly some exaggeration here for effect

I have the same problem, besides the occupied space is the loading time of websites.
Nowadays it's very important for search engine to have a very fast website.

Good idea, along with http://wordpress.org/ideas/topic/limit-thumbnail-size-generation-to-custom-post-type#post-24491 it should cut down a lot of disk and to some extent CPU overhead.

There's also cognitive overhead for users when editing custom thumbnails sizes via plugin.

WordPress would only need to mage size version of the image if it is used.

I also think WP should be smarter in suggesting sizes. If all of your images are adjusted to 400 x 400, this migh be an option your own WP admin should consider suggesting.

Sure this is a useful feature, but how much work is involved in making wordpress resize images?
(I mean, you have to add image manipulation library to word-press, and what types?)

We already have image manipulation in WP :)

WP can resize your images just fine, this is only picking what ones it does.

What I do is each time I upload an image to word-press I resize it beforehand. (Any Graphic tool allows that).

I usually resize my images to 700(width)x 500.

Besides the space it consumes ( I never had space problem), it takes huge amount of time to upload...

    BTW, what about this plugin?
