Replace Uploaded Files and Organize Media

The power of WordPress is amazing, but I don't understand how two very basic concepts aren't part of the media library.

First, how is there no option to replace an uploaded file? Seriously? I either have to delete my file from the library and upload the new version, or replace it through FTP access. This is a very basic necessity for website management.

Secondly, there really needs to be a way to organize media. I personally prefer the idea of folders. I like it looking uncluttered. With this, there should also be the ability to customize the slug, just like with pages.
Categories or tags would work well, too. And, please, give me the ability to have images displayed how I prefer. Right now, it's newest to oldest. Can't I have them display alphabetically? Or even group them by their categories or tags?

Plugins options are nice, but these seem like they should be part of the core experience of WordPress.

Replacing a file would be great and should be a part of the core. For a better management of your media files I can recommend you an amazing plugin: https://de.wordpress.org/plugins/enhanced-media-library/

    Hope this helps Aryenne. Cheers!

    Thanks, Nailcult.de!

I'm already using that plugin. It definitely helps, but It seems like there could be an easier way.

I agree Aryenne, it would be very beneficial if files can be replaced by upload function.

Sometimes users upload pictures which are very big. I download the picture then, use a tool to make it smaller and re-upload it. At the moment I always have to delete the old picture before i can re-upload or I have to change picture and link name.

This could be a lot of easier if the upload function would replace the file with the same name.

These ideas are for "core". As I've just shown above, there is a perfectly good plugin that does this, so there is no need to bloat the code with extra.

A better solution would be nice. I also have to delete the old pics first and must upload them again.

with a lots of wordpress blogs this is a thankless task.

Hey I really like the idea of replacing files without needing to completely delete them and reupload again.

But I think folders are not needed.

We are an web agency and we work all the time with WordPress for our clients.

We do not understand how WordPress does not come (in 2016!) with a media organizer (by folder) and does not allow the replacement of a media without plugin.

These options are the minimum required for everybody using WordPress (pros, individuals,...).

We pray everyday for these basic options but it never comes.

Please work and implement these options (media library with folders and media replacement).

The current media library is a pain!

Totally agree with your post. It should be part of the core to replace files. Also i wish there would be some bulk-options like, multi-deleting or multi-cropping.
