Yes! It is unnecessary doesn't add value for site visitors.

I think WP doesn't allow this presently in order to prevent problem with ppl referencing folders or individuals pages. To be honest, WordPress' URL structure is totally whack and not useful for usability or SEO. The structure that they should use, is to add .html to all posts and pages, and add a trailing slash to all directories.

As is, without the trailing slash on directories, web servers don't know if it is a file or a folder. And it slows it down b/c the server has to figure this out. In the same vein, a trailing slash on a post is actually considered a folder with an index file in it, which is confusing from a usability perspective AND moves everything one level further down in the URL structure, which is not positive for seo, you want to keep everything high in the directory structure as possible.

So, I TOTALLY agree that 'category' should be removed from URL's. And if necessary to achieve this, WP should consider a better thought out URL structure by default--e.g. trailing slashes on directories and .html on all posts/pages. That also happens to be Matt Cutts' recommendation too for usability.
