Plugin Popularity Refinements

How are the "popular plugins" sorted? It very clearly isn't by download count.

Additionally, it'd be nice to be able to see how many unique installations of a plugin there are as that is a more true measure of whether the plugin is trusted or not, since the download statistic includes update downloads. (And so a plugin author can garner a good deal of downloads just by releasing incrementals to drive up the number.)

Magic. Among other benchmarks it has to do with recent downloads and updates.

I will note that gaming the system with a lot of minor updates gets you banned.

Glad to hear there is some control over that to prevent cheating.

To refine the idea above... It would make "popular" a more meaningful (and probably a more helpful) metric if we knew at least what was considered on the public side. Similarly to why people like knowing what Google takes into account when ordering results (even if we may never know exactly how much each factor affects the ordering), it'd satisfy some curiosity.

Admittedly, in the scheme of things, it probably doesn't matter much. But I had to try to satisfy my curiosity here. ;)
