Plugin Directory Sort & Filter Functions

With the number of plugins approaching 50K, I'd like to see sorting and filtering functionality added to the Plugin Directory on WordPress.org.

The number of results from Featured, Popular & Favorites span many pages, making it difficult to quickly find what I'm after.

You could take the Google search approach and add an "Advanced search" feature that would enable us to filter these results and sort them too.

Search is hard. The Plugin API that needs to be able to do this is not within WP, however. It's Sphinx IIRC.

It's on the list of things, but will have to happen after we revamp the backend of the directory to be less insane.

I was thinking along the lines of sorting and filtering the fields already being displayed (Compatible Upto, Last Updated).

I just want to skip over the abandoned and outdated plugins.

I'm actually against sorting the "Ratings" and "Active Installs" because it would create a huge imbalance between new plugins and popular ones. New plugins would never have a chance to be near the top.
