PHP Widgets

The ability to execute php in text widgets (now that they are a part of the core) would be great.

Instead of having umpteen different categories/pages/etc. widgets we could then very easily just use list_cats and it's variables to generate a listings the way we want them.

Also an increase in the max number of text widgets available.

First let me qualify my reply with the following disclaimer: I've only been in the code for about 8 hours total.

php widgets: I have done a lot of work in this direction because it made the upgrade path to 2.2 for me easy, no broken plugins (the ones that broke I put "custom code" in widgets.php). However, I didn't know if anyone would use it or not. Now that I see that there might be interest, I'll clean up the code and submit a patch for this.

text widgets: What would you suggest as an upper limit? I too agree that 9 might be too low for some people and think that 20 would suffice. Although the database can store 2^32 bytes (4294967296 bytes or 4GB) of text widget content, trying to handle that in memory would be problematic. I think the code for this is a simple change and a database insert, however, this might create an upgrade issue. I'll look into it.

I would say 20 should be plenty.

I used to use the king-text plugin for this, which has an upper limit of 20 and I never ran out.

On a site running 2 sidebars with every item using text widgets or a modified version thereof I think the most I have ever used was 13, but I'd imagine there are people who could use 20.

Was this ever done? I need a lot of text widgets! I also would love to php widgets like the Sidebar Module plugin allowed you to have. It's no longer working with 2.5+. (Actually, there is a plugin called Sidebar Module -Reloaded that works, but it disables your WordPress dashboard for some strange reason.)

You can use this plugin to add PHP-code in widgets:
